  1. 1. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Author : Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 2. 2. Transcription factors regulating the Btk promoter

    Author : Susanne Müller; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Btk; X-linked agammaglobulinemia; transcription factors; repression; synergism; Sp 1; Sp3; PU.l; Spi-B; genetherapy.;

    Abstract : Bruton's agammaglobulinemia tyrosine kinase (Btk) is a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase-related to the Src family of kinases. Mutations in various parts of the gene have been shown to lead to X-linked agammaglobulinemia, an immunodeficiency disease which is characterized by a defect in B-cell development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Angiogenic growth factors : mechanism of action and function in vascular development

    Author : Charlotte Rolny; Andrius Kazlauskas; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The mature vascular system is composed of a network of blood vessels organized into arteries, capillaries, and veins. The vessels are composed of endothelial cells surrounded by smooth muscle cells and embedded in a specialized basement membrane. READ MORE

  4. 4. Factors regulating lymphocyte development and peripheral activation

    Author : Anna Makowska; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; serology; Immunology; NKT cells; TFG beta; Treg; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : Peripheral tolerance is regulated by different types of regulatory T cells, including CD1-restricted T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells. This thesis has focused on the interactions between T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) and the immunregulatory function of TGF-b as two important factors regulating differentiation and activation of T cells in the periphery.
