  1. 1. Practice beyond technology when programming and mathematics teaching converge

    Author : Ana Fuentes Martinez; Lars Svensson; Anders Mørch; Högskolan Väst; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Programming; Mathematics; Curriculum; Strategies; Tactics; Michel de Certeau; Programmering; Matematik; Kursplan; L¨aroplan; Strategier; taktiker; Michel de Certeau; Work Integrated Learning; Arbetsintegrerat lärande;

    Abstract : This thesis examines how computer programming and mathematics teaching converge in the presence of a revised mathematics curriculum for upper secondary education. The focus is on the stratified policy strategies deployed by the institutions; how teachers tactically navigated the tensions and contradictions that arose in their everyday teaching; and how these tactics later consolidated in practice. 2. 2. Two facets of Innovation in Engineering Education : The interplay of Student Learning and Curricula Design

    Author : Anders Berglund; Sofia Ritzén; Martin Edin Grimheden; Margareta Norell Bergendahl; William Ion; KTH; []
    Keywords : Engineering education; innovation; design; learning elements; student; change; Ingenjörsutbildning; innovation; design; lärandeelement; student; förändring;

    Abstract : This thesis covers two main perspectives ofinnovation; first, innovation is regarded as an outcome-related mechanism wherelearning is expressed through artefact presentations at the end of adevelopment process; second, innovation comprises a change mechanism in theprocess of student learning, influencing educators to reconsider new methods andpractices. Building on qualitative data from engineering design courses, theaim has been to explore how learning elements in engineering educationinfluence students during early-phase innovation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Adaptive Semi-structured Information Extraction

    Author : Anders Arpteg; Erik Sandewall; Wlodek Kulesza; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Information extraction; Artificial intelligence; Semi-structured data; Reinforced learning; Knowledge management; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : The number of domains and tasks where information extraction tools can be used needs to be increased. One way to reach this goal is to construct user-driven information extraction systems where novice users are able to adapt them to new domains and tasks. READ MORE

  4. 4. Behavior Representation by Growing a Learning Tree

    Author : Tomas Landelius; Hans Knutsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is based on the basic idea of learning by reinforcement, within the theory of behaviorism. The reason for this choice is the generality of such an approach, especially that the reinforcement learning paradigm allows systems to be designed which can improve their behavior beyond that of their teacher. 5. 5. Obstacles to students' learning of the limit concept : A comparative study

    Author : Abraham Kumsa Beyene; Kerstin Pettersson; Iben Christiansen; Juter Kristina; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Obstacles; limit; calculus; case study; comparative study; upper secondary; Mathematics Education; matematikämnets didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis explores obstacles to students’ learning of the limit of a function as students learn the concept in post-compulsory schools in two culturally different contexts, namely Sweden and Ethiopia. The study investigates obstacles to students’ learning of the intuitive limit concept (the limit concept that is based on the intuitive definition) taught in upper secondary schools of these two contexts and characterises the nature of these obstacles.
