  1. 1. Diversity and Limits of Colour Vision in Terrestrial Vertebrates

    Author : Lina Roth; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Reptiles; Dim light vision; Colour vision; Camera-type eyes; Vertebrates; Mammals; Geckos; Horses;

    Abstract : Most terrestrial vertebrates have colour vision, some perceive a less colourful world and others actually discriminate a wider colour spectrum than humans do. Still, we can all make use of the valuable colour information, which is more rigid than just brightness. READ MORE

  2. 2. Population Dynamics and Conservation of the Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis) on the Edge of its Range

    Author : Sven-Åke Berglind; Pekka Pamilo; Per Sjögren-Gulve; Coulson Tim; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; demography; extinction; habitat; Lacerta agilis; management; metapopulation; peripheral populations; population dynamics; population viability analysis; reintroduction; reptiles; umbrella species; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : The sand lizard (Lacerta agilis) reaches the northern periphery of its distribution in south-central Sweden, where small, isolated relict populations occur in pine heath forests on sandy sediments. Modern forestry and fire suppression have reduced the amount of suitable open habitat for the species in this area and seem to be important for its decline. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of central catecholaminergic neuronal systems in the lizard Anolis sagrei

    Author : Agneta Rehn; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; double labelling; immunohistochemistry; interplexiform cells; amacrine cells; catecholamines; development; retina; Reptiles; brain; Zoology; Zoologi;

    Abstract : Catecholamines, comprising the neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (A) are synthesized by specific enzymes (tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine ß-hydroxylase (DBH), phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT)) in the central nervous system. The development and distribution of different catecholaminergic systems have been described in both the brain and retina of the lizard Anolis sagrei. READ MORE

    Abstract : Marine reptiles constitute a diverse group of secondarily aquatic tetrapods that have inhabited the world’s oceans for the greater part of the last 250 million years. While certain large-scale anatomical changes have been observed through progressive alterations of their skeletal morphology (e.g. READ MORE
