  1. 1. Intestinal barrier function in health and disease

    Author : Pernilla Nejdfors; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; VIP.; PACAP; secretion; ion transport; urine reservoir; radiation therapy; ulcerative colitis; macromolecules; dextran; mannitol; Ussing chamber; Intestinal permeability; mucosa; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The intestinal epithelium has the dual function of absorbing nutrients and water as well as being a barrier to potentially harmful substances such as macromolecules and bacteria. In the present thesis the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa was studied in vitro in Ussing diffusion chambers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Urinary diversion by the Kock ileal reservoir. Studies on clinical outcome, quality of life, bile acid and vitamin B12 metabolism

    Author : Gunnar Olofsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kock reservoir; urinary diversion; quality of life; bile acids; vitamin B12;

    Abstract : Introduction: Urinary diversion with the Kock ileal reservoir has been performed at Sahlgrenska University Hospital since 1975. One key question is the long-term consequences regarding glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and quality of life of this kind of surgery. Other important topics are the consequences due to loss of ileum. READ MORE

  3. 3. Atrial function and loading conditions in athletes

    Author : Flavio D'Ascenzi; Michael Henein; Sergio Mondillo; Roxy Senior; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; athlete s heart; training; exercise; speckle-tracking echocardiography; atrial strain; atrial deformation; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Intensive training is associated with hemodynamic changes that typically induce an enlargement of cardiac chamber. Despite LA dilatation in athletes has been interpreted as a benign adaptation, little evidence is available. READ MORE

  4. 4. Left atrial function in health and disease

    Author : Mark Henein; Per Lindqvist; Stellan Mörner; Reidar Winter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left atrium; Doppler echocardiography; atrial interaction; atrial pressure;

    Abstract : The Objectives of this thesis are:1) To study possible atrial interaction in patients with right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to significant pulmonary (PS) and aortic valve stenosis (AS), respectively.2) To assess left atrial (LA) intrinsic myocardial function and its relationship to indirect measures of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). 5. 5. Mechanical and histological disturbances in advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation

    Author : Matteo Cameli; Michael Henein; Guy Lloyd; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Advanced heart failure; heart transplantation; speckle tracking echocardiography; left ventricular function; right ventricular function; left ventricular fibrosis; left ventricular filling pressure; atrial strain; kariologi; Cariology;

    Abstract : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish capability and accuracy of speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA), left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) function and their correlation with myocardial fibrosis, filling pressure and clinical outcomes in advanced heart failure (HF) patients before and after heart transplantation (HT).I demonstrated that HT recipients had impaired LV twist dynamics in the form of reduced rotation twist angle and untwist rate but time to peak twist was not different from the age matched controls and other cardiac surgical patients.
