  1. 1. Mitochondrial function in sepsis - Temporal evolvement of respiratory capacity in human blood cells

    University dissertation from Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University

    Author : Fredrik Sjövall; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2013]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human; sepsis; severe sepsis; septic shock; platelets; mitochondria; OXPHOS; high-resolution respirometry; mitochondrial disorders; multiple organ failure; biogenesis; leukocytes; cytokines; respirometry; oxygen consumption; blood cells; temporal;

    Abstract : Sepsis is a devastating disease that is caused by the host’s response to an overwhelming infectious process. As sepsis progresses, organs distant from the site of infection become affected and sepsis-induced multiple organ failure ensues. READ MORE

  2. 2. Phytoremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and trace elements

    University dissertation from Växjö : Linnaeus University Press

    Author : Charlotte Marchand; Linnéuniversitetet.; [2017]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Petroleum Hydrocarbon; Trace Elements; Gentle Soil Remediation Options; Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon; Respirometry; Ecopile; Bacteria; Fungi; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : The rapid urbanization and industrialization has led to an increase of disposal petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) and trace elements (TE) into the environment. These pollutants are considered as the most toxic contaminants in the world due to their persistence in the environment, and the long range of toxicological effects for living beings. READ MORE

  3. 3. TREATMENT OF WASTEWATER GENERATED BY WOOD-BASED DRY INDUSTRIES: ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES & ELECTROCOAGULATION

    University dissertation from Växjö/Kalmar : Linnaeus University Press

    Author : Henrik Hansson; Linnéuniversitetet.; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Advanced oxidation processes; Electrocoagulation; Fenton; Industrial storm-water; Ozone; Respirometry assays; Wastewater; Wood floor industry.; Environmental Chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Wood is a material with an enormous number of applications. For decades, the development of wastewater treatment technologies tailored for the wood sector has focused on those industries that have water as an integral part of the industrial production, such as paper and pulp. Abstract : This thesis is focused on the role of mitochondria in pancreatic β-cells and brown adipose tissue (BAT). Two main aspects of mitochondria were explored; mitochondrial functional efficiency and the interrelationship between mitochondrial shape and function. READ MORE

  5. 5. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp

    University dissertation from Department of Ecology, Lund University

    Author : Lars Pettersson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [1999]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Benefits; Costs; Predation; Chemical cues; Fish; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong.
