1. Characterization of Retinal Progenitor Cells : Focus on Proliferation and the GABAA Receptor System
Abstract : One strategy to repair an injured or degenerated retina is to stimulate the replacement of damaged or dead neurons with cells derived from endogenous stem- or progenitor cells. A successful strategy requires knowledge about how the proliferation and differentiation of the endogenous cells are regulated. READ MORE

2. Neurotrophic Factor Receptors in the Normal and Injured Visual System : Focus on Retinal Ganglion Cells
Abstract : The focus of this thesis is the life and death of adult retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). RGCs are neurons that convey visual information from the retina to higher centers in the brain. READ MORE

3. Interactions between neural retina, retinal epithelium and choroid
Abstract : The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a non-replicating monolayer that plays a key role nursing the photoreceptors of the neural retina, regulating fluid movement within the subretinal space, maintaining a basal laminar layer of Bruch s membrane, and influencing the choriocapillaris. This project investigates how surgical manipulation of the retinal epithelial layer influences the neural retina, the choroid and the epithelial layer itself. READ MORE

4. Human embryonic stem cells for retinal repair : preclinical in vitro and in vivo studies for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration with human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells
Abstract : Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the major cause of vision loss in the industrialized countries in people above sixty years of age. The dry advanced form of the disease, also termed as geographic atrophy (GA), is characterized by the progressive death of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) and consequent loss of the adjacent photoreceptor (PR) layer, leading to an impaired visual function. 5. Clinical and Experimental Approach to the Benefits and Risks of Laser Treatment for Diabetic Macular Edema
Abstract : Diabetic retinopathy is an ophthalmic complication of diabetes that currently affects 93 million people worldwide. Diabetic macular edema is a subtype of diabetic retinopathy that is characterized by leaking blood vessels in the central part of the retina, and it is a major cause of vision loss in individuals with diabetes.
