1. Effects of Rho kinase, prostacyclin and L-arginine on microvascular permeability and perfusion
Abstract : This thesis presents some effects of Rho kinase, prostacyclin (PGI2) and nitric oxide (NO) in relation to trauma and inflammation by evaluating their effects on microvascular perfusion and permeability in mouse brain and in cat skeletal muscle. PGI2 and NO are endogenous vasoactive substances produced by the endothelium. READ MORE

2. Rho-kinase signalling in systemic inflammatory responses
Abstract : Endotoxemic liver injury is characterized by an initial release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and CXC chemokines, which leads to a recruitment of leukocytes to the liver microvasculature. The mechanisms of leukocyte recruitment are well characterized and comprise on the one hand a mechanical trapping of leukocytes in sinusoids, and on the other hand a multi-step process of leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions in postsinusoidal venules. 3. Signal Transduction by Proline-Rich Tyrosine Kinase Pyk2
Abstract : The proline-rich tyrosine kinase (Pyk2) together with focal adhesion kinase (FAK) define a family of non-receptor protein tyrosine kinases that are regulated by diverse stimuli. Activation of Pyk2 has been implicated in multiple signaling events, including modulation of ion channels, activation of MAP kinase cascades and apoptotic cell death. READ MORE

4. Developmental regulation of smooth muscle contraction in the urinary bladder
Abstract : Smooth muscle cells in the urinary bladder are involved in the control of urine filling and emptying. We have used mice to study the contractile regulation of urinary bladder smooth muscle during the fetal period. READ MORE

5. SIGNALING MECHANISMS IN SEPSIS-INDUCED IMMUNE DYSFUNCTION
Abstract : Sepsis and subsequent organ failure remain the major cause of mortality in intensive care units in spite of significant research efforts. The lung is the most vulnerable organ affected by early hyper-inflammatory immune response in septic patients. READ MORE
