6. Mesoscopic thin film superconductors - A computational framework
Abstract : Motivated by experiments on superconductors in the microscopic regime and the realization of small superconducting devices such as qubits, we initiate a computational project in the form of a numerical simulation package to model and predict the behavior of these type of systems. It is a multidisciplinary endeavor in that it employs theory, computational science, software design, and to some extent new visualization techniques. READ MORE

7. Linear Control and Estimation Using Operator Factorization
Abstract : The filtering, prediction and smoothing problems as well as the linear quadratic control problems can very generally be formulated as operator equations using basic linear algebra. The equations are of Fredholm type II and difficult to solve directly. READ MORE

8. On Structure Exploiting Numerical Algorithms for Model Predictive Control
Abstract : One of the most common advanced control strategies used in industry today is Model Predictive Control (MPC), and some reasons for its success are that it can handle multivariable systems and constraints on states and control inputs in a structured way. At each time-step in the MPC control loop the control input is computed by solving a constrained finite-time optimal control (CFTOC) problem on-line. READ MORE

9. Directional Decomposition in Anisotropic Heterogeneous Media for Acoustic and Electromagnetic Fields
Abstract : Directional wave-field decomposition for heterogeneousanisotropic media with in-stantaneous response is establishedfor both the acoustic and the electromagnetic equations. We derive a sufficient condition for ellipticity of thesystem's matrix in the Laplace domain and show that theconstruction of the splitting matrix via a Dunford-Taylorintegral over the resolvent of the non-compact, non-normalsystem's matrix is well de ned. 10. Splitting schemes for nonlinear parabolic problems
Abstract : This thesis is based on five papers, which all analyse different aspects of splitting schemes when applied to nonlinear parabolic problems. These numerical methods are frequently used when a problem has a natural decomposition into two or more parts, as the computational cost may then be significantly decreased compared to other methods.
