Abstract : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies. The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 3. 3. Animals and Humans : Human-animal interaction in northern Sweden during the late glacial and postglacial time

Author : Therese Ekholm; Sabine Sten; Carl-Gösta Ojala; Ola Magnell; Uppsala universitet; []

Abstract : When the last remnant of the Weichsel glacier melted in northern Sweden, around 7000 BC, pioneer settlers entered virgin land, following their prey, which in turn followed the vegetation dispersion. Some of the settlers derived from the east and the northeast and spread from the Russian taiga, through Finland and into northern Sweden, the study area for this thesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular ecology of marine mammals

Author : Morten Tange Olsen; Per Palsbøll; Martine Bérubé; William “Bill” Amos; Stockholms universitet; []

Abstract : Marine mammals comprise a paraphyletic group of species whose current abundance and distribution has been greatly shaped by past environmental changes and anthropogenic impacts. This thesis describes molecular ecological approaches to answer questions regarding habitat requirements, genetic differentiation, and life-history trade-offs in three species of marine mammals.
