  1. 1. On wear in rolling/sliding contacts

    Author : Rickard Nilsson; Ulf Olofsson; I. Sherrington; KTH; []
    Keywords : Technology; wear; rolling; sliding; contact; environment; TEKNIKVETENSKAP; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to increase the understanding of wear in rolling/sliding contacts such as the wheel-rail contact for railroads and the roller-washer contact for roller bearings. The Stockholm commuter train network has been the subject of papers A and B in this thesis in which the wear and surface cracks on rails has been observed for a period of three years. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the influence of surface roughness on rolling contact forces

    Author : Oskar Lundberg; Ines Lopez Arteaga; Leif Kari; Matthias Kröger; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rolling contact; Surface roughness; Contact forces; Contact modelling; Friction; Road; Asphalt; Substrate; Test-rig; Sliding; Stick–slip; Tyre; Rubber; Tread-block; Wheel–rail interaction; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : Road vehicle tyres, railway wheels and ball bearings all generate rolling contact forces which are transferred within a finite area of contact between the rolling element and the substrate. Either it is visible or not for the human eye, a certain degree of roughness is always present on the contacting surfaces and it influences the generation of both vertical and lateral contactforces. 3. 3. Effect of water contamination on the diffused content of hydrogen under stress in AISI-52100 bearing steel

    Author : Tajammal Imran; Maskinelement; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; vacuum technology; hydraulics; Mechanical engineering; materialteknik; Materiallära; Material technology; Hydrogen Diffusion; Rolling Element; Machine Elements; Tribology; Hydrogen Embrittlement; vibration and acoustic engineering; Maskinteknik; hydraulik; vakuumteknik; vibrationer; akustik;

    Abstract : Abstract Hydrogen embrittlement is a degradation process of mechanical/tribological properties (toughness, wear etc.) of mating steel surfaces. This is caused by the presence and interaction of hydrogen with applied stresses. Therefore, it is important to quantify the hydrogen content which could be dissolved under applied stresses in steel. 4. 4. On the asperity point load mechanism for rolling contact fatigue

    Author : Johan Dahlberg; Bo Alfredsson; Sören Sjöström; KTH; []
    Keywords : Rolling contact fatigue; Spalling; Asperity contact; Point load; Micro-cracks; Traction; Applied slip; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Rolling contact fatigue is a damage process that may arise in mechanical applications with repeated rolling contacts. Some examples are: gears; cams; bearings; rail/wheel contacts. The resulting damage is often visible with the naked eye as millimeter sized surface craters. READ MORE

  5. 5. Condition-Based Maintenance: Selection and Improvement of a Cost-Effective Vibration-Based Maintenance Policy for Rolling element Bearings

    Author : Basim Al-Najjar; Sherwin David; Bo Bergman; Produktionsekonomi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; vibration and acoustic engineering; vacuum technology; hydraulics; Mechanical engineering; a cost-effective vibration-based maintenance policy.; Integrated maintenance; Condition monitoring and control; Total Time on Test-plots; Vibration monitoring; effectiveness and accuracy; Failure causes and mechanisms; Maintenance quality; Maskinteknik; hydraulik; vakuumteknik; vibrationer; akustik; Commercial and industrial economics; Industriell ekonomi; Maintenance Technology; Terotechnology;

    Abstract : Modern machinery is expensive and therefore must run at high availability and effectiveness which cannot be achieved without an effective maintenance policy. Condition monitoring, (CM), techniques can be utilised to reduce or arrest the rate of deterioration of a component so increasing operating life. READ MORE
