1. Evolution of cellular complexity and other remarkable features in Gemmataceae : Complex bacterial lineages defy prokaryotic trends
Abstract : Bacteria of the family Gemmataceae belong the phylum Planctomycetes and are remarkable because of their complex cellular architectures, previously considered to be traits exclusive to eukaryotes. This thesis provides clues to the atypical cell envelope, the enhanced radiotolerance and the amazing cellular complexity of these bacteria. READ MORE

2. Effects of Motion Sickness on Human Thermoregulatory Mechanisms
Abstract : The presented studies were performed to investigate the effects of motion sickness (MS) on human autonomic and behavioural thermoregulatory mechanisms during cold stress and in a thermoneutral environment. The roles of histaminergic and cholinergic neuron systems in autonomic thermoregulation and MS-dependent dysfunction of autonomic thermoregulation were studied using a histamine-receptor blocker, dimenhydrinate (DMH), and a muscarine-receptor blocker, scopolamine (Scop). 3. Description of spatial and temporal distributions of epiphytic lichens
Abstract : Lichens are, in most cases, sensitive to anthropogenic factors such as air pollution, global warming, forestry and fragmentation. Two studies are included in this thesis. The first is an evaluation of the importance of old oak for the rare epiphytic lichen Cliostomum corrugatum (Ach.) Fr. READ MORE

4. On protein structure, function and modularity from an evolutionary perspective
Abstract : We are compounded entities, given life by a complex molecular machinery. When studying these molecules we have to make sense of a diverse set of dynamical nanostructures with wast and intricate patterns of interactions. READ MORE
