  1. 1. Sulphur Regulations for Shipping – Why a Regional Approach?: Scientific and Economic Arguments in IMO Documents 1988-1997

    Author : Erik Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; costs; framing; shipping; SECA; distribution; environmental; policy environment; international; MARPOL; conceptual lens; IMO; Annex VI; regional approach; economic interests; directional problem; benefits; policy-making; SOx; science;

    Abstract : Some environmental issues for shipping are regulated globally with uniform standards and others with stricter regulations in specific areas. This thesis aims to provide an understanding of why a regional approach was chosen with SOx Emission Control Areas (SECAs) as the main form of control of sulphur oxide emissions from international shipping, with explanations based on documents from negotiations within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) during 1988-1997. 2. 2. Particle Emissions from Ships

    Author : Maria Zetterdahl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LNG; marine fuel; fuel sulphur content; particle emission; sulphur emission control area; aromatics; SECA; heavy fuel oil; marine diesel oil; liquefied natural gas; ship emission;

    Abstract : Since 1st of January 2015 ships operating in sulphur emission control areas (SECAs) have to use marine fuels with a fuel sulphur content less than 0.1 %m/m. This regulation forces the ship owners to make a fuel shift and use low-sulphur marine fuel oils, use alternative fuels or use scrubbers on-board their ships. READ MORE

  3. 3. Murine polyomavirus VP1 virus-like particles as vectors for gene therapy and as vaccines against polyomavirus infection and tumors

    Author : Andrea Vlastos Franzén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Polyomavirus; virus-like particles; pseudocapsids; gene therapy; vaccines; tumors;

    Abstract : Murine polyomavirus (MPyV) is a double stranded DNA virus ubiquitous in mice. The virus genome encodes for three transforming antigens that interact with the host cell machinery in order to initiate viral production. The transforming antigens can under certain circumstances when not controlled, e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. Culture and Capacity : Drought and Gender Differentiated Vulnerability of Rural Poor in Nicaragua, 1970-2010

    Author : Lisa Segnestam; Ronny Pettersson; Yvonne Svanström; Malin Beckman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Nicaragua; Gender; Vulnerability; Adaptive capacity; Drought; Economic History; ekonomisk historia;

    Abstract : This dissertation interprets gender-differentiated vulnerability to drought within a rural community located in the dry zone, la zona seca, of Nicaragua, a region that has been identified by the government and NGO sector as suffering from prolonged and, since the 1970s, more frequent droughts.  A combination of gender, capitals, and vulnerability demonstrates the value in using a multidimensional perspective to look at the socioeconomic and cultural contexts that form the capacity individuals have had to reduce their long-term vulnerability to drought in Nicaragua. 5. 5. The Regulation of Global SOx Emissions from Ships: IMO proceedings 1988-2008

    Author : Erik Svensson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; IMO; SOx; global cap; Annex VI; MARPOL; air pollution; ships; sulphur oxides; policy-making; emissions;

    Abstract : MARPOL Annex VI regulates air pollution from international shipping. Emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx) are regulated through a global limit for the sulphur content of bunker fuels (referred to as a global cap) as well as a stricter limit in particularly sensitive areas, referred to as SOx Emission Control Areas (SECAs).
