  1. 6. Studies of SNAP-25 in regulated membrane fusion : metabolic consequences and tuning of intracellular Ca(2+) dynamics in beta cells

    Author : Teresa Daraio; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Increased release of insulin is usually regarded as a symptom of metabolic syndrome, contributing to insulin resistance in peripheral organs thus affecting glucose and insulin homeostasis. The existing animal models to address the metabolic syndrome are currently not optimal. READ MORE

  2. 7. Studies on proteins involved in the molecular regulation of insulin exocytosis

    Author : Wei Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Actin; ADP; ATP; Ca2 channel; CAPS; beta-cells; CSP; exocytosis; GK rat; insulin; islet; Mint; Munc-18; NSF; PI 4-kinase; PI 4 P; PI 4; 5 P2; alpha-SNAP; SNAP-25; synaptotagmin III; syntaxin; tomosyn; type 2 diabetes mellitus; VAMP-2.;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by impaired insulin secretion and insulin resistance. Better understanding of molecular mechanisms of insulin secretion may help to optimize type 2 diabetes management. READ MORE

  3. 8. Calcium dynamics and vesicle-release proteins in a prion-infected neuronal cell line

    Author : Malin Sandberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Prion; Scrapie; Voltage-gated N-type calcium channels; SNARE proteins; Exocytosis; Long-term depolarization;

    Abstract : The prion particle, PrPSc, is an infectious, misfolded form of the cellular prion protein, PrPC that is expressed at high levels in the central nervous system. Prions cause neurodegenerative diseases with clinical signs including dementia, ataxia and myoclonus. These diseases cause characteristic electroencephalographic changes. READ MORE

  4. 9. New insights in parathyroid hormone secretion : with focus on exocytosis and calcium signaling

    Author : Ming Lu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The parathyroid is distinguished from other endocrine systems since its primary stimuli inhibit hormone secretion. It is generally considered that extracellular Ca2+ binds to a membrane receptor (calcium sensing receptor, or CaSR), and via second messengers modulate parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. READ MORE

  5. 10. Aspects on the modulation of potassium channels in insulin-producing beta-cells

    Author : Zuheng Ma; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : islets of Langerhans; over-stimulation; diazoxide; exocytosis; proteasome; microarray; Kv1.1.;

    Abstract : This thesis attempts to further clarify mechanisms behind the negative effects of overstimulation and the beneficial effect of β-cell rest. For this purpose diazoxide - opener of K+-ATP channels, which reversibly inhibits glucose-induced insulin secretion, was used as a probe. READ MORE
