21. Virus Host Interactions in SARS Coronavirus Infection
Abstract : The global outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome which began in 2002 and ended in 2003 resulted in over 8000 cases in 29 countries, causing an atypical pneumonia which resulted in a case fatality rate of ~10%. The etiological agent of this disease was found to be a novel coronavirus dubbed SARS Coronavirus (SARS-CoV). READ MORE

22. Aspects on the modulation of potassium channels in insulin-producing beta-cells
Abstract : This thesis attempts to further clarify mechanisms behind the negative effects of overstimulation and the beneficial effect of β-cell rest. For this purpose diazoxide - opener of K+-ATP channels, which reversibly inhibits glucose-induced insulin secretion, was used as a probe. READ MORE

23. On the mechanisms and physiological function of somatodendritic dopamine release in substantia nigra
Abstract : Somatodendritic release of neurotransmitters is a neuronal function that is poorly understood in comparison with the more abundant terminal release. This study aimed at characterising somatodendritic dopamine release in substantia nigra in terms of release mechanisms and possible physiological function in motor control. READ MORE

24. Pharmacological evaluation of the NO/cGMP signalling system
Abstract : Platelet activation and inhibition are tightly balanced processes, regulated by various endogenous molecules. In this regard, the endothelium plays a key role in mediating inhibition of platelets by releasing nitric oxide (NO) and cAMP-elevating prostaglandins. READ MORE

25. Changes in neuronal properties induced by neurotropic infections
Abstract : The nervous system can be the target for various bacterial and viral infectious agents. Certain bacterial toxins have been found to impair specific proteins, such as proteins involved in transmitter release and in the regulation of the cytoskeleton. READ MORE
