  1. 1. Development of New Methods for Inferring and Evaluating Phylogenetic Trees

    Author : Tobias Hill; Helgi Schiöth; Robert Fredriksson; Mark Wilkinson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmacology; Evolution; Phylogeny; SPR; Genetic Algorithm; Tree metrics; Farmakologi;

    Abstract : Inferring phylogeny is a difficult computational problem. Heuristics are necessary to minimize the time spent evaluating non optimal trees. In paper I, we developed an approach for heuristic searching, using a genetic algorithm. Genetic algorithms mimic the natural selections ability to solve complex problems. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biomolecules at Interfaces -Studied by Surface and Solution Techniques

    Author : Anna Bergstrand; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LDL; sepsis; PEG; LPS; lipopolysaccharide; QCM-D; SPR;

    Abstract : The interfacial behaviour of biomolecules in general and proteins in particular is interesting from a biochemical point of view since proteins are involved in processes such as complement activation, blood coagulation and atherosclerotic plaque formation, but also in the context of biomedical applications such as solid-phase diagnostics, therapeutic aphaeresis and biosensors. The objective of this thesis is to study biomolecular interactions using surface sensitive biosensor techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, SPR, in combination with bulk techniques. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reducing Attrition via Improved Strategies for Pre-clinical Drug Discovery : SPR-biosensor Aided Interaction Studies

    Author : Johan Winquist; Helena Danielson; Roderick E. Hubbard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The efficacy of a drug is tightly intertwined with its interaction mechanism with the drug target. The mechanism is dependent on the physicochemical and structural characteristics of both target and drug molecule.Drug discovery is plagued by a high attrition rate, whereas in the clinic, a major issue is drug resistance. 4. 4. Surface Modifications for Biointerfaces - Supported Lipid Bilayers and some Aspects of Microcontact Printing

    Author : Karin Glasmästar; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; QCM-D; PDMS; cell attachment; supported lipid bilayer; microcontact printing; SPR; ToF-SIMS; protein adsorption; formation kinetics; XPS;

    Abstract : Biointerfaces engage several disciplines: physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine. They are found on the surfaces of implants, tubes and tanks in the food industry or on the hull of a boat. In this work, model surfaces aimed for contact with biological systems were studied. 5. 5. Macromolecules at Interfaces

    Author : Helén Larsericsdotter; Sven Oscarsson; Jos Buijs; Willem Norde; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Protein; Adsorption; Immobilization; Surface; Surface Plasmon Resonance; SPR; Mass Spectrometry; MS; Differential Scanning Calorimetry; DSC; FT ICR; Lysozyme; Bovine Serum Albumin; BSA; Myoglobin; Globular; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the structure and stability of globular proteins adsorbed onto nanometer-sized hydrophilic silica particles were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX), and mass spectrometry (MS). The adsorption process itself was characterized with fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). READ MORE
