11. Magnetism in Transition Metal Systems : Interplay between structure, dimensionality and electron correlation
Abstract : In this thesis, an ab initio study of electronic structures and magnetic properties of transition metal systems has been presented, covering bulk, interface and surface geometries. Among them are Fe, Co, Ni, CaMnO3, Co2MnSi, a ferromagnetic Heusler alloy, as well as double-perovskites oxides such as Sr3(Fe1.25Ni0.75)O6 and Nd2NiMnO6. READ MORE

12. Characterization of Magnetic Nanoscale Systems: From Molecules to Particles and Self-Assembled Chains
Abstract : This thesis characterizes magnetic nanoscale systems with increasing size and aspect ratio using synchrotron radiation-based spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, combined with conventional magnetometry. The systems studied are molecular magnets, bimagnetic nanoparticles and self-assembled magnetic nanochains. READ MORE

13. Designing order with long-range interactions in mesoscopic magnetic chains
Abstract : This thesis investigates how the low-energy magnetic configuration of a mesoscopic chain can be tuned by geometrical modifications. The magnetic arrays made by single-domain stadium shaped elements positioned side-by-side were fabricated by patterning into a sputtered ferromagnetic thin film. READ MORE

14. The Influence of Interlayer Exchange Coupling on Magnetic Ordering in Fe-based Heterostructures
Abstract : Temperature dependent magnetization measurements were conducted on Fe-based heterostructures. A linear increase of the magnetic critical temperature with increasing Fe thickness was found for Fe/V superlattices with strong interlayer exchange coupling. READ MORE

15. First Principles Studies of Functional Materials Based on Graphene and Organometallics
Abstract : Graphene is foreseen to be the basis of future electronics owing to its ultra thin structure, extremely high charge carrier mobility, high thermal conductivity etc., which are expected to overcome the size limitation and heat dissipation problem in silicon based transistors. READ MORE
