6. Significance of N2 fixing planktonic symbioses for open ocean ecosystems
Abstract : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixers, also called diazotrophs, are able to reduce atmospheric N2 into bioavailable nitrogen, giving them an advantage in open ocean regions with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. The focus of this thesis are three lineages of symbiotic heterocystous filamentous types (het-1, het-2 and het-3), that associate with several genera of microalgae called diatoms (collectively referred to as Diatom Diazotroph Associations, DDAs). Abstract : Feather moss-cyanobacteria associations, although still poorly understood, are recognised as essential for the regulation of nitrogen (N) input into N-limited ecosystems such as boreal forests due to their ability to carry out N2-fixation. This thesis aimed to investigate the diversity and composition of feather moss-associated cyanobacterial communities, the mechanisms by which cyanobacterial colonisation on mosses occurs and the fate of the N that they fix, and how various combinations of biotic and abiotic conditions influence cyanobacterial N2-fixation activity. Abstract : In recent years, the need to reduce reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertilizer has led to extensive research on biological nitrogen fixation, especially on root nodule symbioses. My study focuses on actinorhizal symbioses, the symbiotic interactions between members of nitrogen-fixing soil actinobacteria from the genus Frankia and a diverse group of plants from eight families, collectively called actinorhizal plants.
