1. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria
Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 2. Diversity Underfoot : Systematics and Biogeography of the Dictyostelid Social Amoebae
Abstract : Dictyostelids (Amoebozoa) are a group of social amoebae consisting of approximately 150 species, which are found in terrestrial habitats worldwide. They are divided into eight major clades based on molecular phylogeny, and within these clades are many species complexes. READ MORE

3. Resolving deep nodes of eukaryote phylogeny
Abstract : My thesis aims to solve deep nodes in the eukaryote tree of life (eToL), by developing new data sets and new approaches to analysing them. In paper I, I described a dataset of 76 universal eukaryotic proteins of bacterial descent (euBacs), in order to test the relations among the three main divisions of mitochondriate eukaryotes (Amorphea, Diaphretickes and Discoba). 4. Genomics of Sorocarpic Amoebae
Abstract : Sorocarpy is the aggregation of unicellular organisms to form multicellular fruiting bodies (sorocarps). This thesis is about the two best-known groups of sorocarpic amoebae, Dictyostelids and Acrasids.Paper I describes assembly and analysis of a multigene dataset to identify the root of the dictyostelid tree.
