  1. 6. Correlation Effects in Nanostructures

    Author : Paata Kakashvili; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conformal field theory; Coulomb blockade; Wigner crystal.; Strongly correlated electrons; Kondo effect; bosonization; Luttinger liquid; STM; single-electron transistor;

    Abstract : In this Ph.D. thesis I present the background and providefurther details to the work presented in the appended papers. The background consists of brief overviews of Kondo physics, Luttinger liquid theory, and conformal field theory. READ MORE

  2. 7. Sustainable Arsenic Mitigation A Strategy for Scaling-up Safe Water Access : A Strategy for Scaling-up Safe Water Access

    Author : Mohammed Hossain; Prosun Bhattacharya; Marinus Eric Donselaar; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bangladesh; drinking water; arsenic mitigation; local tubewell driller; sediment color tool; low-manganese; Intermediate Deep aquifer; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Abstract : In rural Bangladesh, the drinking water supply is mostly dependent upon manually operated hand pumped tubewells, installed by the local community. The presence of natural arsenic (As) in groundwater and its wide scale occurrence has drastically reduced the safe water access across the country and put tens of millions of people under health risk. 3. 8. Fire behaviour of upholstered furniture component materials at multiple scales

    Author : Konrad Wilkens Flecknoe-Brown; Avdelningen för Brandteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fire; upholstered furniture; Polyurethane; Scaling; Experimental; Modeling; fabric;

    Abstract : In this research, both experimental test methods and computer models were used to characterise the thermal decomposition processes of selected upholstered furniture component materials, namely; flexible polyurethane foam and a range of different fabric coverings. This was first done at some of the smallest, simplest levels available, and how these materials were tested and the methods chosen to investigate them, was examined. READ MORE

  4. 9. Moisture Conditions and Frost Resistance of Concrete in Hydraulic Structures

    Author : Martin Rosenqvist; Avdelningen för Byggnadsmaterial; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydraulic Structures; Hydro Power; Concrete Dams; Concrete; Frost Resistance; Scaling; Spalling; Moisture Absorption; Macroscopic Ice Lens Growth;

    Abstract : Owing to the winter conditions in Sweden, the effects of frost action may have a considerable impact on the deterioration of concrete. Both superficial and internal damage, which are suspected to have been caused by frost action, have been found in concrete in hydraulic structures. READ MORE

  5. 10. New Dimensions of Moving Bed Biofilm Carriers : Influence of biofilm thickness and control possibilities

    Author : MARIA PICULELL; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biofilm control; biofilm thickness; biological wastewater treatment; carrier; moving bed biofilm reactor; nitrification; nitritation; organic removal; process optimization; scaling; suspended growth;

    Abstract : The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is a biological wastewater treatment process in which microorganisms grow as biofilms on suspended carriers. Conventionally, MBBRs are mainly designed and optimized based on the carrier surface area, neglecting the dynamic relationship between carrier design, reactor operation and biofilm characteristics, such as biofilm thickness and the composition of the microbial community.
