  1. 1. Development of improved radiation therapy techniques using narrow scanned photon beams

    Author : Björn Andreassen; Anders Brahme; Håkan Danared; Roger Svensson; Antony Lomax; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : IMRT; Scanned photon beams; PET-CT treatment verification; Monte Carlo; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : The present thesis is focused on the development and application of narrow scanned high energy photon beam for radiation therapy. The introduction of physically and biologically optimized intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) requires a flexible and accurate dose delivery method to maximize the treatment outcome. 2. 2. Comparative study of Radiation Therapy of Targets in the Upper Abdomen with Photon- or Scanned Proton-beams

    Author : Gracinda Mondlane; Albert Siegbahn; Michael Gubanski; Iuliana Toma-Dasu; Crister Ceberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; photon radiotherapy; proton beam radiotherapy; gastric cancer; liver metastases; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : Recently, there has been an increase in the number of proton beam therapy (PBT) centers operating worldwide. For certain cases, proton beams have been shown to provide dosimetric and radiobiological advantages when used for cancer treatment, compared to the regular photon-beam based treatments. READ MORE

  3. 3. Radiation therapy of upper gastrointestinal cancers with scanned proton beams : A treatment planning study

    Author : Gracinda Mondlane; Albert Siegbahn; Michael Gubanski; Iuliana Toma-Dasu; Crister Ceberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Treatment planning; gastric cancer; liver metastases; photon beam therapy; proton beam therapy; dosimetric comparison; normal tissue complication probability; risk of radiation-induced secondary cancer; patient selection; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : Proton beam therapy (PBT), using scanned beams, is an emerging modality used for the treatment of cancer. The clinical advantages of PBT, compared to commonly used photon beam therapy, have been demonstrated in different studies. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of optimized radiation therapy using external electron and photon beams

    Author : Mats Åsell; Henk Huizenga; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Target design; Collimator Scattered Radiation; Collimator Scatter Kernel; Treatment Planning; Radiation Therapy Optimization; Intensity Modulation; Energy Modulation; Beam Modality Combinations; medicinsk strålningsfysik; Medical Radiation Physics;

    Abstract : The development of new intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques and treatment optimization tools makes it desirable to further improve modulation methods by using scanned photon and electron beams. It is shown that the narrowest possible photon beams have the potential to improve the flexibility in dose delivery, speed up the dose delivery and improve the treatment outcome. READ MORE

  5. 5. Verification of high energy photon therapy based on PET/CT imaging of photonuclear reactions

    Author : Sara Janek Strååt; Anders Brahme; Cathrine Jonsson; Iuliana Dasu; Sibylle Ziegler; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Photonuclear reactions; PET CT treatment verification; High-energy photon therapy; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : For classical and intensity modulated radiation therapy of deep-seated tumors, high-energy photons are the optimal radiation modality from an integral dose point of view. By using narrow scanned beams the treatment outcome can be improved substantially by delivering biologically optimized intensity modulated distributions often with sharp dose gradients. READ MORE
