1. Schottky barriers and Schottky barrier based devices on Si and SiC
Abstract : This work is devoted to a study of the formation andcharacterisation of Schottky Barriers on differentsemiconductors with an extension to the development of devicesbased on Schottky barriers. The major part of the work has beendone on 6H-SiC, but Si and SiGe alloys have also been used. READ MORE

2. Carbon Nanotube Transistors: Nanotube Growth, Contact Properties and Novel Devices
Abstract : Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are envisioned to be used as the basic building blocks in future electronics due to their excellent electronic properties such as high mobility, compatibility with high-k dielectrics and small diameters resulting in advantageous electrostatics. This thesis is divided into three separate topics related to increasing the fabrication yield and performance of CNT field effect transistors (CNTFETs). READ MORE

3. Resonant Tunneling in Laterally Confined Quantum Structures
Abstract : In the thesis, three-dimensionally confined resonant tunneling structures were studied experimentally. Two approaches were used for obtaining quantum confinement: gate-defined lateral constriction of double barrier structures, and epitaxial growth of self-assembled quantum dots. READ MORE

4. Three-Dimensional Metal-Semiconductor Heterostructures for Device Applications
Abstract : Fabrication and characterisation of buried metal contacts in compound semiconductors are demonstrated. The contacts have been investigated due to their usage both as gates in transistors and as active or passive elements in novel devices. READ MORE

5. Nanoscale Characterisation of Barriers to Electron Conduction in ZnO Varistor Materials
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the microstructure of zinc oxide varistor materials used in surge protecting devices. This class of material has been characterised with special emphasis on the functional microstructure and the development of the microstructure during sintering. READ MORE
