21. Assessment of Pulmonary Blood Flow in Heart Failure. Using Novel and Non-Invasive Diagnostic Methods
Abstract : In heart failure (HF), the heart is unable to pump effectively in order to satisfy the demands of the body. The elevated filling pressure seen in HF leads to accumulation of fluid in the lungs, i.e pulmonary congestion. While investigation with chest X-ray is recommended, it has limitations in detecting pulmonary congestion. READ MORE

22. Computer-Assisted Diagnosis for the Interpretation of Bone Scintigraphy. A new approach to improve diagnostic accuracy
Abstract : The most common cancers in the western countries are breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, and these cancer types, together with lung cancer, often metastasise to the skeleton. Bone scan is used to determine whether metastases are present, and the result of the examination serves as a guide in the choice of treatment strategy. READ MORE

23. Pulmonary embolism : validation of diagnostic imaging methods in the clinical setting
Abstract : Pulmonary embolism (PE) is an elusive diagnosis and none of the existing imaging modalities have a 100% diagnostic specificity or sensitivity. Pulmonary arteriography (PA) is the most specific test although the improvement of computed tomography technique has made this a commonly used method. Lung scintigraphy often gives ambiguous results. 24. Salivary function after pediatric bone marrow transplantation
Abstract : Salivary gland dysfunction is one of the oral long-term complications that most affect the quality of life among long-term survivors after treatment for malignant diseases. The aims of the studies in this thesis were to examine the effect of pediatric bone marrow transplantation (BMT) conditioning regimens on salivary function, caries-associated microflora, and development of dental caries; define risk factors of salivary dysfunction; evaluate subjective xerostomia; and study functional disturbances in the major salivary glands using salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS). 25. Radiological imaging of pulmonary emphysema : preoperative evaluation of candidates for lung volume reduction surgery
Abstract : Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for pulmonary emphysema, first described by Brantigan in 1957, was re-introduced by Cooper et al in 1995. From a surgical point of view, information on the extent and distribution of emphysema is mandatory and also partly determines the outcome. READ MORE
