  1. 6. Baltic Sea from Space : The use of ocean colour data to improve our understanding of ecological drivers across the Baltic Sea basin – algorithm development, validation and ecological applications

    Author : Dmytro Kyryliuk; Susanne Kratzer; Steve W. Lyon; Michelle McCrackin; Koponen Sampsa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean Colour; MERIS; OLCI; water quality; marine ecology; coastal areas; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Coastal areas are the most densely populated areas in the world and thus are under immense anthropogenic pressure. To ensure their function and ecological role, coastal areas require continuous monitoring and management. The rapidly emerging field of satellite remote sensing provides a unique opportunity to monitor both land and oceans from Space. READ MORE

  2. 7. Carbon Dynamics in Northern Marginal Seas

    Author : Sofia Hjalmarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dissolved inorganic carbon; total alkalinity; continental shelf pump; marginal seas; Baltic Sea; Skagerrak; Laptev Sea; East Siberian Sea; Chukchi Sea;

    Abstract : The marginal seas have, despite their relatively small area, an important role in the global carbon cycle. They are largely influenced by carbon and nutrient fluxes from land and a large part of the biological production occurs in the marginal seas. READ MORE

  3. 8. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nina Svensson; Erik Sahlée; Hans Bergström; Anna Rutgersson; Søren Larsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary layer; Baltic Sea; stable conditions; low-level jet; sea breeze; boundary layer rolls; mesoscale effects; WRF; LIDAR;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 4. 9. Light conditions in seasonally ice-covered waters : within the Baltic Sea region

    Author : Elina Kari; Susanne Kratzer; Matti Leppäranta; Monika Winder; Tiit Kutser; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seasonal sea ice; Fast ice; Drift ice; Phytoplankton spring bloom; Under-ice plume; Turbidity; Suspended particulate matter; Chlorophyll; Coloured dissolved organic matter; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Seasonal ice cover is a major driver of seasonality in aquatic ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. Ice cover influences the underwater light conditions directly by limiting the light transfer and indirectly by modifying the mixing and circulation under the ice. READ MORE

  5. 10. Oceanographic studies of the Baltic Sea with emphasis on sea ice and mixing processes

    Author : Christian Nohr; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Baltic Sea; Water and Heat budgets; Deep-water mixing; Internal Wavedrag; Dynamical Sea Ice production; Sea Ice dynamics;

    Abstract : This thesis comprises of model estimates of the water and heat budgets, re-estimating of the budget of deep-water mixing energy, model studies of generation mechanisms for internal waves, sea ice dynamermics and finally sea ice monitoring. Common site for all the studies are the Baltic Sea. READ MORE
