  1. 1. Functional and genetic studies in type 2 diabetes and obesity

    Author : Mohammed Hamza Z E Seed Ahmed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are highly prevalent disorders reflecting a complex interplay of genetics, epigenetics, and environment. They constitute serious health problems and lead to significant morbidity and mortality. READ MORE

  2. 2. Plant-animal interactions and seed output of two insectpollinated herbs

    Author : Anna R. Waites; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant reproduction; pollen limitation; pollinator behaviour; heterostyly; seed predation; Lythrum salicaria; Pedicularis palustris; stigma receptivity; self-pollen; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : I combined comparative and experimental studies in the field and in the greenhouse to examine factors influencing reproductive success in two insect-pollinated herbs, the tristylous, selfincompatible perennial Lythrum salicaria and the self-compatible, biennial Pedicularis palustris. More specifically, I explored (i) the effects of plant population characteristics on the intensity and outcome of interactions with pollinators and seed predators, (ii) whether flower morphology affects duration of stigma receptivity, and (iii) whether damage-induced reduction in floral display reduces pollinator visitation and increases pollen limitation. 3. 3. Geographic Variation, Hybridization and Evolution in the Bladder Campions, Silene vulgaris and S. uniflora (Caryophyllaceae)

    Author : Eva Månsby; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chemotaxonomy. Physiology of nonvascular plants; Systematisk botanik; Växtgenetik; Systematic botany; taxonomy; morphology; phytogeography; Plant genetics; Paternal effects; Seed polymorphism; Ecology; Ekologi; Crossing barriers; cpDNA markers; Genetic variation; Hybridization; Post-glacial migration; Allozymes; Silene vulgaris; Silene uniflora; taxonomi; morfologi; kemotaxonomi. Växters fysiologi inte kärlväxter .;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, I investigated the inter- and intraspecific variation in the Silene vulgaris/uniflora species-complex (the bladder campions). I have focused on the effects of past and present hybridization both on a large scale ? over the whole of Europe ? and on a local scale. Silene vulgaris and S. READ MORE

  4. 4. Selection on floral traits in Primula farinosa

    Author : Didrik Vanhoenacker; Johan Ehrlén; Jon Ågren; Arjen Biere; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coevolution; correlational selection; Falseuncaria ruficiliana; geographic mosaic; hand pollination; Hermann Müller; interaction strength; plant-insect interactions; pollen limitation; selection strength; spatiotempora; Uta stansburiana; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Flowers and inflorescences have evolved in relation to animals for at least 100 million years. Plants attract pollinators with large, conspicuous, bright-coloured or scented flowers. These display attributes, however, also attract herbivores. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic diversity and grain protein composition of tetraploid wheat (Triticum durum Desf) germplasm from Ethiopia

    Author : Faris Hailu; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The extent and patterns of genetic diversity in landraces of tetraploid wheat germplasm collected from major wheat-producing regions of Ethiopia were assessed with the use of agromorphological,phenol-qualitative traits, grain proteins and molecular markers. The extent of genetic erosion of landraces in tetraploid wheat germplasm from Ethiopia was also evaluated. READ MORE
