  1. 1. On the Ecology and Evolution of seed and Bud Dormancy

    Author : Patric Nilsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bet-hedging; overcompensation; herbivory; plant compensatory growth; bud dormancy; endosperm; seed provisioning; Seed dormancy; parent-offspring conflicts; Ecology; Ekologi; Botany; Botanik;

    Abstract : This thesis considers the ecological and evolutionary significance of seed and bud dormancy. First, I present theoretical support to the idea that seed dormancy may evolve as a strategy to reduce sib competition in temporally homogeneous environments. READ MORE

  2. 2. Comparative Seed Morphology and Phylogenetics : Case Studies in Basal Angiosperms (ANITA) and Asterids (Lysimachia, Ericales)

    Author : Il-Chan Oh; Mats Thulin; Arne A. Anderberg; Bertil Ståhl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; systematisk botanik; Systematic Botany;

    Abstract : The first half of the thesis deals with the seed morphology of members of the ANITA grade at the base of the angiosperm phylogeny (Amborella, Nymphaeales, Illiciales, Trimeniaceae, and Austrobaileyaceae), especially Illiciaceae and Schisandraceae. Seed characters support a major division between the New World and Old World species of Illicium. READ MORE

  3. 3. Morphometric differentiation in Papaver radicatum (Papaveraceae) : Geographic pattern and significance for refugial survival theory

    Author : Eva Selin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Capsule morphology; Geographic pattern; Leaf morphology; Morphometric variation; Papaver radicatum; Refugial survival; Seed shape; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The morphometric pattern of variation among and within Scandinavian populations of the alpine species Papaver radicatum was studied. Results from analyses (including multivariate techniques) of capsule and leaf traits of wild-collected and cultivated plants as well as wild-collected seeds show correlated patterns of variation in capsule traits and partly corresponding patterns of variation between capsule and seed traits. 4. 4. Shape Control Synthesis and Microstructure Studies of Metal Nanoparticles

    Author : Xin Wen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide; sodium oleate; polyvinylpyrrolidone; Gold nanorod; palladium nanodendrite; seed mediated growth; transmission electron microscopy; hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride;

    Abstract : Metal nanoparticles have been extensively studied in recent years due to their unique chemical, biological and physical properties. Gold (Au) and palladium (Pd) nanoparticles are two of the most popular materials because Au nanoparticles have a strong localized surface plasmon resonance effect and Pd nanoparticles have high hydrogen adsorption and chemical catalytic capacities. 5. 5. Plant Population Dynamics of Dodonaea angustifolia and Olea europaea ssp. cuspidata in Dry Afromontane Forests of Ethiopia

    Author : Tesfaye Bekele; Ingvar Backéus; Karin Bengtsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Demography; Dodonaea angustifolia; Elasticity; Establishment; Germination; Natural regeneration; Olea europaea ssp. cuspidata; Population structure; Recruitment; Seed bank; Survival; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Human disturbance has led to excessive deforestation and to a very limited forest cover in the Afromontane zone of Ethiopia, which forms a large part of the country. Thus urgent conservation measures are required to ameliorate the situation. READ MORE
