2. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence
Abstract : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN. 3. Seismicity Analyses Using Dense Network Data : Catalogue Statistics and Possible Foreshocks Investigated Using Empirical and Synthetic Data
Abstract : Precursors related to seismicity patterns are probably the most promising phenomena for short-term earthquake forecasting, although it remains unclear if such forecasting is possible. Foreshock activity has often been recorded but its possible use as indicator of coming larger events is still debated due to the limited number of unambiguously observed foreshocks. READ MORE

4. Fast Radon Transforms and Reconstruction Techniques in Seismology
Abstract : The measurements conducted in tomography and seismology typically yield large multidimensional data sets. This in combination with the fact that the data may have an irregular structure makes it computationally prohibitive to use simple reconstruction methods directly. READ MORE

5. Physics of Aftershocks in the South Iceland Seismic Zone : Insights into the earthquake process from statistics and numerical modelling of aftershock sequences
Abstract : In seismology, an important goal is to attain a better understanding of the earthquake process. In this study of the physics of aftershock generation, I couple statistical analysis with modelling of physical processes in the postseismic period. READ MORE
