  1. 11. Indirect effects of moose on the birds and the bees

    Author : Karen Marie Mathisen; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Large herbivores are important drivers of ecosystem processes, affecting plant species richness and composition, primary productivity, habitat structure as well as nutrient cycling. Large herbivore activities may therefore have important indirect effects on other plants and animals in the same ecosystem. READ MORE

  2. 12. Single-cell methodologies for ecological and metabolic mapping of mixotrophic microeukaryotes

    Author : Javier Florenza; Stefan Bertilsson; Alexandra Z. Worden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mixotrophy; single-cell;

    Abstract : Mixotrophy in aquatic protists is pivotal for our understanding of aquatic microbial food web dynamics. This thesis is centered around aquatic unicellular mixotrophs, and comprises three methodological approaches aimed to tackle mixotroph ecology at single-cell resolution: the identification of actively feeding mixotrophs in natural samples, the determination of specific interactions among mixotrophs and bacterial prey, and the profiling of two distinct mixotrophic populations based on the gene expression of their constitutive individuals. 3. 13. Bioavailability of pesticides to benthic invertebrates : the role of aquatic biofilms and humic substances

    Author : Anna Lundqvist; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In agricultural landscapes, pesticides are frequently contaminating nearby aquatic ecosystems. Unlike most other contaminants, pesticides are targeted against specific organism groups, but will also have negative effects on non-target organisms. When pesticides enter aquatic environments they tend to sorb to fine organic matter. READ MORE

  4. 14. Sustainable farming of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus)

    Author : Hanna Carlberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) is a salmonid that is well adapted to cold waters and is commonly farmed in open net cages. A breeding program has enabled a relatively large production in Sweden, providing a continuous supply of fresh fish to the market. READ MORE

  5. 15. Copepods in Skeletonema-dominated food webs : Toxicity and nutritional quality as factors controlling copepod-diatom interactions

    Author : Roswati Md Amin; Ulf Båmstedt; Sigrun Jónasdóttir; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Copepod-diatom interaction; toxicity; nutritional quality; Skeletonema;

    Abstract : My thesis focuses on copepod-diatom interactions, specifically on the effects of food quality and toxicity on copepod feeding, reproductive success and behavior but as a frame, also includes a quantitative evaluation of copepod carbon requirements compared to other trophic plankton groups. My aim was to evaluate the function of copepods in diatom-dominated spring blooms. READ MORE
