1. Charge-Spin Conversion and Electronic Transport in Two-Dimensional Materials and van der Waals Heterostructures
Abstract : Applications related to artificial intelligence (AI), 5G communication, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT) will necessitate wide range of data collection, communication and processing. Current charge-based technology using conventional materials suffers adverse effects with down-scaling the device size and has limited efficiency in meeting the future demands for computation and data storage. 2. Effect of Substrate on Bottom-Up Fabrication and Electronic Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons
Abstract : Taking into account the technological demand for the controlled preparation of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with well-defined properties, the present thesis is focused on the investigation of the role of the underlying metal substrate in the process of building GNRs using bottom-up strategy and on the changes in the electronic structure of GNRs induced by the GNR-metal interaction. The combination of surface sensitive synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic techniques and scanning tunneling microscopy with in situ sample preparation allowed to trace evolution of the structural and electronic properties of the investigated systems. 3. Quantum transport and spin effects in lateral semiconductor nanostructures and graphene
Abstract : This thesis studies electron spin phenomena in lateral semi-conductor quantum dots/anti-dots and electron conductance in graphene nanoribbons by numerical modelling. In paper I we have investigated spin-dependent transport through open quantum dots, i.e., dots strongly coupled to their leads, within the Hubbard model. READ MORE

4. First principles simulations of electron transport at the molecule-solid interface
Abstract : In this thesis I concentrate on the description of electron transport properties of microscopic objects, including molecular junctions and nano junctions, in particular, inelastic electron tunneling in surface-adsorbate systems are examined with more contemplations. Boosted by the rapid advance in experimental techniques at the microscopic scale, various electric experiments and measurements sprung up in the last decade. READ MORE

5. Silicon Nanowires for Biomolecule Detection
Abstract : Starting from silicon on insulator (SOI) material, with a top silicon layer thickness of 100 nm, silicon nanowires were fabricated in a top down approach using electron beam (e-beam) lithography and subsequent eactive ion etching (RIE) and oxidation. Nanowires as narrow as 30 nm could be achieved. READ MORE
