  1. 1. Learning Physics through Transduction : A Social Semiotic Approach

    Author : Trevor Stanton Volkwyn; John Airey; Bor Gregorcic; Cedric Linder; David Brookes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Introductory physics; transduction; interactive engagement; social semiotics; representational competence; probeware; mathematical tools; 1-D kinematics; coordinate systems; magnetic field; pedagogical affordance; disciplinary affordance; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This doctoral thesis details the introduction of the theoretical distinction between transformation and transduction to Physics Education Research. Transformation refers to the movement of meaning between semiotic resources within the same semiotic system (e.g. READ MORE

  2. 2. From Words to Voids : Absencing and Haunting in Crimean Semiotic Landscapes

    Author : Natalia Volvach; Christopher Stroud; Caroline Kerfoot; Brigitta Busch; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; semiotic landscapes; linguistic landscapes; multilingualism; bilingualism; indexicality; semiosis; materiality; Linguistic Citizenship; in visibility; erasure; resemiotization; absence; trace; ghost; spectre; haunting; interdiscursivity; Crimea; Ukraine; tvåspråkighet; Bilingualism;

    Abstract : This thesis seeks to contribute to the body of ethnographically-oriented semiotic landscape research by addressing linguistic and non-linguistic signs in the landscapes of contemporary Crimea. It is based on research conducted in the region back in 2017 and 2019 after the Russian annexation but before the full-scale war against Ukraine, which started on 24 February 2022. READ MORE

    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; algal bloom; Baltic Sea; cultural eutrophication; dead zone; waste ecology; environmental degradation; environmental humanities; critical ocean studies; environmental imaginary; environmental value; more-than- human; textual analysis; visual analysis; storytelling; algblomning; Östersjön; kulturell övergödning; bottendöd; avfallsekologi; miljöförstöring; miljövetenskap; kritiska havsstudier; miljömyndighet; miljövärde; mer-än-mänsklig; textanalys; visuell analys; berättande; Historiska studier av teknik; vetenskap och miljö; History of Science; Technology and Environment;

    Abstract : This dissertation researches how perspectives in western industrial societies communicate about and give meaning to environmental degradation through case studies on the causes and effects of cultural eutrophication—namely nutrient pollution, algal blooms, and dead zones—in the Baltic Sea. Utilizing this approach, this dissertation addresses the ecological problems of cultural eutrophication in marine ecosystems by exposing normative claims humans make about the Baltic Sea and its contents as well as detailing how seas that exceed human expectations may offer insights into negotiating differing perspectives, discrepancies in power, and ways of being among humans and non-humans in marine environments. 4. 4. Linking Programming to Representations : Understanding meaning-making in physics education through semiotic resources

    Author : Kim Svensson; Nationellt Resurscentrum för Fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Social Semiotics; Programming; Transduction; Semiotic Resources; Representations; Transductive Link; Fysicumarkivet A:2022:Svensson; Social Semiotik; Programmering; Transduction; Semiotisk Resurs; Representationer; Transductiv Länk;

    Abstract : Programming is investigated with a social semiotic lens to study how programming can contribute to meaning-making in physics. The analysis focuses on how new and dynamic representations can be created with the help of programming and how programming allows students to investigate and create their own models of physical phenomena. 5. 5. Using a Social Semiotic Perspective to Inform the Teaching and Learning of Physics

    Author : Tobias Fredlund; Cedric Linder; David Wolfe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; semiotic resources; physics education research; interactive engagement; disciplinary affordance; disciplinary-relevant aspects; patterns of disciplinary-relevant aspects; the Variation Theory of Learning; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis examines meaning-making in three different areas of undergraduate physics: the refraction of light; electric circuits; and, electric potential and electric potential energy. In order to do this, a social semiotic perspective was constituted for the thesis to facilitate the analysis of meaning-making in terms of the semiotic resources that are typically used in the teaching and learning of physics.
