1. Circadian Rhythms in Moth Sex Pheromone Communication
Abstract : Sex pheromone communication and related physiological processes are regulated by circadian clock mechanisms in many moth species. This thesis includes studies of circadian rhythms in sexually relevant behaviours and communication in the Egyptian cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis, the turnip moth Agrotis segetum, the Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella and the Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella. 2. Male moth behaviour and perception in pheromone plumes
Abstract : Behaviour of male moths and electrophysiological responses of male pheromone-specific olfactory receptor neurones were studied in two model species, the oriental fruit moth Grapholita molesta and the turnip moth Agrotis segetum. The studies were aimed at elucidating the relative importance of different mating disruption mechanisms. READ MORE

3. Behaviour of Pine Sawflies in Relation to Pheromone-Based Pest Management
Abstract : Pine sawflies (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) are severe pine defoliators. This thesis investigated sawfly behaviour related to the use of pheromones in integrated pest management, including monitoring with pheromone traps and mating disruption. READ MORE

4. Chiral building blocks for synthesis of pine sawfly sex pheromones Enantioselective Lipase Catalysed Acylations and Esterifications of Primary Alcohols and Acids and Synthesis of the Sex Pheromone of the Pine Sawfly Microdiprion pallipes
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of new methods for thepreparation of enantiomerically pure methyl branched alkylcompounds and their use as building blocks in the synthesis ofstereoisomerically pure pheromones of pine sawflies. The high regioselectivity, enantioselectivity and activityof lipases in organic solvent in conjunction withenvironmentally compatible reaction conditions have madelipase-catalysed synthesis an attractive alternative toconventional synthetic methods in organic chemistry. 5. Insights into the Evolution of Moth Pheromone Communication: Lessons from the European Corn Borer
Abstract : Chemical communication by means of sex pheromones is central to the mating systems of a wide range of organisms. Because reproductive isolation is often based on pheromone differences, understanding how pheromones diverge is necessary for a complete comprehension of the speciation process. READ MORE
