  1. 1. Quality of life in patients with cronical lower limb ischaemia: Before and after revascularisation

    Author : Rosemarie Klefsgård; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasti; By-Pass; critical ischaemia; Intermittent claudication; Sence of Coherence; Short Form 36; Quality of life; Nottingham Health Profile; traumatologi; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatology; orthopaedics; Surgery; Validity; Responsiveness; Effect Size; Outcome;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to assess quality of life in patients with varying degrees of lower limb ischaemia before and after revascularisation, to assess quality of life in relation to the degree of ischaemia and the respondents’ sense of coherence (SOC) and in comparison with a healthy control group, and to compare two different quality of life instruments regarding their usefulness as outcome measures. Patients were assessed using the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and the SOC scale before and six months after successful revascularisation and compared with 102 healthy controls. READ MORE

  2. 2. Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate : Quality of Life and Nasal Form and Function among Adults

    Author : Maria Mani; Mats Holmström; Valdemar Skoog; Anna Andlin-Sobocki; Magnus Becker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; unilateral cleft lip and palate; quality of life; SF-36; nasal function; nasal breathing; nasolabial appearance; cleft width; long-term results; Plastic surgery; Plastikkirurgi; Plastikkirurgi; Plastic Surgery;

    Abstract : Unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is a craniofacial malformation with functional and aesthetical impact on the face and the upper airways. The aims of the current thesis were to evaluate Quality of life (QoL) in adults treated for UCLP  (I), to objectively evaluate nasal form and function and to search for possible differences in residual nasal deformity and impairment of function between patients operated according to one-stage and two-stage palate closure (II) as well as to evaluate the relationship between professional and lay rating and patient satisfaction with nasolabial appearance (III) and to identify factors associated with lower levels of QoL and less satisfaction with nasal appearance among adults treated for UCLP (IV). 3. 3. The Euclidean traveling salesman problem with neighborhoods and a connecting fence

    Author : Håkan Jonsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dependable Communication and Computation Systems; Kommunikations- och beräkningssystem;

    Abstract : An important class of problems in robotics deals with the planning of paths. In this thesis, we study this class of problems from an algorithmic point of view by considering cases where we have complete knowledge of the environment and each solution must ensure that a point-sized robot capable of moving continuously and turning arbitrarily accomplishes the following: (1) visits a given set of objects attached to an impenetrable simple polygon in the plane, and (2) travels along a path of minimum length over all the possible paths that visit the objects without crossing the polygon. 4. 4. LIVING WITH PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE Quality of life and the patients' view of meaning

    Author : Christine Wann-Hansson; Institutionen för hälsovetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Short Form 36 Health Survey; Long-term follow-up; Quality of life; Peripheral arterial disease; Chronic illness; Nottingham Health Profile; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Content analysis;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate quality of life and the meaning of living with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) before and after revascularization in a long-term and methodological perspective. The sample in the first study consisted of 142 patients with PAD who were planned for a revascularization. READ MORE

  5. 5. Swallowing dysfunction among older people in short-term care : prevalence, effect of intervention, and risk of mortality

    Author : Patricia Hägglund; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Per Wester; Mary Hägg; Karin Brunnegård; Per Östberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : swallowing disorder; dysphagia; elderly care; intermediate care; undernutrition; oral health; treatment; rehabilitation; quality of life; mortality risk; survival;

    Abstract : Objectives: Swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia) is a common, but often neglected condition among geriatric patients that can cause severe complications such as malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia and death. The aims of this thesis were to (i) describe the study design and method of the multidisciplinary and multicenter project SOFIA (Swallowing function, Oral health, and Food Intake in old Age), (ii) study the prevalence of and the relationship between swallowing dysfunction and risk of undernutrition among older individuals in short-term care, (iii) study the effect of oral neuromuscular training on swallowing dysfunction among older individuals, and (iv) to investigate the association between poor oral health, swallowing dysfunction and mortality.
