  1. 1. Computer-aided optimization of complex processes in production systems and urban environments

    Author : Mikael Yamanee-Nolin; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Optimization; modeling; simulation; complex processes; process systems engineering; preparative chromatography; blue-green systems;

    Abstract : Complex processes can be seen as a series of actions, changes, and/or events that are related in different temporospatial manners, and thus are potentially difficult to understand. Optimizing such a process is therefore not necessarily a simple feat, and doing it experimentally may become both time-consuming and expensive. READ MORE

  2. 2. Uncertainty in environmental decision-making : effects of defined or undefined guidance in the decision process

    Author : Karin Luthbom; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Waste Science and Technology; Avfallsteknik;

    Abstract : Decision-making in environmental issues often includes uncertainty in the input data and the resulting uncertainty when the data is used. Some spatial decisions are however taken without any formal analysis, meaning that the decision-makers have a mental map and preconceived notions about the decision options before the final decision actually is taken. 3. 3. Applicability of Remote Sensing Techniques to Groundwater Exploration in Semi-Arid Hard Rock Terrain - A Systematic Approach

    Author : Nils Kellgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; groundwater exploration; hard rock; semi-arid; decision support; lineaments; GIS; remote sensing; borehole siting;

    Abstract : Groundwater exploration in hard rock terrain involves complex decisions, attributable to a lack of reliable data and the heterogeneous nature of the geological environment. Targets for drilling of boreholes are commonly selected on the basis of knowledge, or perceptions, of groundwater occurrence in a specific area. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental politics and the enchantment of modernity : mercury and radioactive waste disposal in Sweden

    Author : Ylva Uggla; Rolf Lidskog; Johan Hedrén; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; environmental politics; mercury; radioactive waste; modernity; risk; sociologi; Sociology; Sociologi; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Abstract : Current Swedish environmental policy embraces the notion of sustainable development and the discourse of ecological modernisation, both of which stress the role of modern institutions in environmental protection work. In pursuing ecological sustainability, the Swedish Government assigns importance to the issue of domestic, safe, final disposal of mercury and radioactive waste; responsibility for mercury and radioactive waste management must not be passed to future generations. 5. 5. District heating comes to town : The social shaping of an energy system

    Author : Jane Summerton; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; district heating; municipal technology; energy system; pipeline; large t<:chnical system; actor network; multiorganization; grid; grid-based energy system; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the introduction of district heating in an "ordinary" Swedish town: Mjölby. The process was initiated in 1974 and the decision to build was taken in 1979. In the following years pipelines were laid down and the system was gradually built. In 1987, a permanent heat plant was ready to assume operation. READ MORE
