  1. 1. Trophic, Indirect, and Evolutionary Interactions in a Plant–Herbivore–Parasitoid System

    Author : Johan Stenberg; Lars Ericson; John Parker; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant resistance; coevolution; herbivory; Skeppsvik; food web; parasitism; maternal effect; natural selection; Filipendula ulmaria; Chrysomelidae; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis project was to elucidate patterns and processes associated with the biotic interactions in a natural plant–herbivore–parasitoid food web characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity with regard to species composition. The system examined is based on island populations of the perennial herb Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria, Rosaceae), located in the Skeppsvik Archipelago. READ MORE

  2. 2. Interactions between natural enemies and the dioecious herb Silene dioica

    Author : Viktoria Pettersson; Barbara E. Giles; Lars Ericson; Pia Mutikainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silene dioica; Delia criniventris; Caryocolum viscariella; Microbotryum violaceum; plant-herbivore interactions; plant -pathogen interactions; sex bias; sex rato; successional gradients; fitness effects; Skeppsvik Archipelago; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : About 6% of all angiosperms are dioecious. This separation of sexual function to male and female individuals, and the fundamentally different patterns of reproductive resource allocation that follows that separation, are thought to have important ecological and evolutionary consequences for plant enemy interactions. 3. 3. Breeding System Evolution and Pollination Success in the Wind-Pollinated Herb Plantago maritima

    Author : Emil Nilsson; Jon Ågren; Pia Mutikainen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Breeding system; mating system; gynodioecy; male sterility; reproductive output; self-compatibility; self-incompatibility; wind-pollination; founder event; genetic structure; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I examined variation in sex expression and mating patterns in the sexually polymorphic, wind-pollinated herb Plantago maritima. With a combination of field studies, greenhouse experiments, and genetic analyses, I (a) examined factors influencing sex ratio variation in gynodioecious plants (in which hermaphrodites and females coexist), (b) discovered variation in breeding system, (c) investigated density-dependence of seed production, and (d) documented genetic variation within and among populations close to the northern range margin in Europe. 4. 4. Genetics and ecology of natural populations

    Author : Elisabeth Lundqvist; Ulf Lagercrantz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Angelica archangelica; Bistorta vivipara; Viscaria alpina; Eiseniella tetraedra; ecotypes; hydrochory; genetic differentiation; clone diversity; genetic patterns; riparian;

    Abstract : I have studied the genetic variation of single species using morphological variation and enzyme electrophoresis. I have striven to understand the interaction between the breeding structure and the ecology of the species in relation to the community, in which it lives. The work was done in the county of Västerbotten, northern Sweden. READ MORE
