  1. 1. Simple haptics : Sketching perspectives for the design of haptic interactions

    Author : Camille Moussette; Daniel Fällman; Bill Buxton; William Verplank; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; interaction design; haptics; haptic interactions; sketching; sketching in hardware; prototypes; prototyping; industrial design; human computer interaction; design research; research through desgin;

    Abstract : Historically, haptics—all different aspects of the sense of touch and its study—has developed around very technical and scientific inquiries. Despite considerable haptic research advances and the obviousness of haptics in everyday life, this modality remains mostly foreign and unfamiliar to designers. READ MORE

  2. 2. Shape and Being Shaped : Sketching with Haptics in Soma Design

    Author : Charles Windlin; Kristina Höök; Jarmo Laaksolahti; Anders Lundström; Bill Buxton; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sketching; Soma Design; Constructive Design Research; Haptic Interaction Design; first-person; Människa-datorinteraktion; Human-computer Interaction;

    Abstract : Sketching is an integral part of the design process, and it often occurs in the early ideation phase where the focus is on expressing ideas, thoughts, and emotions, allowing them to take shape and making it possible to share them with others to propel the design process forwards. In principle, sketching is a process of externalising thoughts into visualisations, and it influences the creator and collaborators by enabling them to realise and reflect on the possibility and viability of their ideas and develop them further by adding to or subtracting from the sketches. 3. 3. PENSIERI - An Inquiry into Sketching and Modelling in Design

    Author : Maral Babapour Chafi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Physical and Digital Modelling; Sketching; Design Activities; Concept Generation; Product Representations;

    Abstract : When proposing ideas for design solutions, designers often make representations, for example sketches and models of different kinds. This thesis seeks to examine what designers do when interacting with different media to externalise their ideas, and the resources they have at their disposal. READ MORE

  4. 4. ”Sketch and Talk”, Drawing lines between incarcerated humans, the interior, and “stuff”. Design methodologies for (well)-being in prisons, youth homes and psychiatric hospitals

    Author : Franz James; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Design methods; Design methodology; Field drawing; Ethnographic drawing; Carceral design; Prison design; Youth homes; Forensic psychiatric hospitals; Sketching;

    Abstract : With increasing global and local incarceration, the demand for prison beds is rapidly growing. The Swedish government’s plans for implementing youth prisons and amending laws regarding young people’s sentences risk increasing the already high numbers of mental health problems. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tangible participation - Engaging designs and design engagements in pedagogical praxes

    Abstract : This dissertation contributes to three fields within design research: - Explorations of a design space related to aesthetics of Tangible Interaction, which have led to a set of design imaginations as well as perspectives on salient design qualities. - Views on and a designerly example of knowledge construction related to Research through Design as well as to programmatic approaches to design research.
