  1. 1. Modeling normal and malignant hematopoiesis in vitro. To screen for extrinsic regulators and differentiation therapy

    Author : Simon Hultmark; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; acute myeloid leukaemia; Hematologi; stem cells; differentiation induction; leukaemia; treatment; small molecule drugs; PKC; FLT3; shRNA; small molecule inhibitor; Small Molecule Libraries; MEK ERK pathway; natural product; co-culture; drug screening; combination therapy;

    Abstract : The incredible thing with blood stem cells, also known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), is that they can restore normal hematopoiesis in patients that need a new blood system. Since a prerequisite for successful transplantation is immune compatibility, it requires large donor registries to find a suitable match for a recipient. READ MORE

  2. 2. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus : assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products

    Author : Mårten Strand; Göran Wadell; Mikael Elofsson; Ya-Fang Mei; Lieve Naesens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; antiviral; adenovirus; herpes simplex virus; small molecule; inhibitor; hsv; drug discovery; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; datorlingvistik; computational linguistics; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting. 3. 3. Small-Molecule Galectin Ligands : Structure-Based Optimisation of Affinity and Selectivity

    Author : Sjors Van Klaveren; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Galectins; structure activity relation;

    Abstract : In the body, all cell surfaces are covered with glycans, and many regulatory components havecarbohydrates attached to them, which can aid in their function. Galectins are a family of proteins whichcan bind to specific glycans and oligosaccharides and cross-link them to influence a wide range of cellularprocesses. READ MORE

  4. 4. Identification and characterization of small molecules targeting MYC function

    Author : Qinzi Yan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The MYC family genes (c-, N- and L-MYC) encode potent oncoproteins/transcription factors regulating fundamental cellular processes involved in cell proliferation, metabolism and survival, and they play an important role in tumor development. Overexpression of MYC often induce apoptosis as a failsafe mechanism to prevent tumor development and it is known to sensitize cells to genotoxic agents that induce DNA damage by triggered apoptosis. 5. 5. Development of molecular recognition by rational and combinatorial engineering

    Author : Andreas Jonsson; Stefan Ståhl; Mats Persson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Affibody molecule; albumin binding domain; protein engineering; phage display; amyloid beta peptide; TNF; HSA; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Combinatorial protein engineering, taking advantage of large libraries of protein variants and powerful selection technology, is a useful strategy for developing affinity proteins for applications in biotechnology and medicine. In this thesis, two small affinity proteins have been subjected to combinatorial protein engineering to improve or redirect the binding. READ MORE
