  1. 1. The Bentonite Barrier - Swelling Properties, Redox Chemistry and Mineral Evolution

    Author : Daniel Svensson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; montmorillonite; bentonite; smectite; freezing; thawing; hydration; intercalation; four-water-layer; ethylene glycol; X-ray diffraction; time-resolved; spatial-resolution; XANES; Fe; redox; iron; ABM; TBT; Äspö;

    Abstract : Bentonite is planned for use as a buffer material in high-level radioactive waste repositories, where safety assessment is performed for very long periods (100-1000 ka). This thesis focuses on the swelling of smectites in liquid water, and analysis of bentonite from field experiments at Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 2. Geotechnical Aspects of Buildings on Expansive Soils in Kibaha, Tanzania

    Author : Charles Lucian; Staffan Hintze; Sven Knutsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Expansive soils; soil properties; potential swell; smectite montmorillonite ; multivariate statistics; geo-statistics; spatial variability; lightweight structures; Civil engineering and architecture; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract :  The focus of this study is on potential damages to buildings resulting from expansive soils in Tanzania, particularly clay soils in Kibaha. For the fact that most of the affected structures are founded on expansive soils, a clear understanding of the behaviour of soils and their interaction with structures has been of interest to the study in order to evaluate properly the source of the problem. 3. 3. Interfacial properties of calcium montmorillonite in aqueous solutions : Density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics studies on the electric double layer

    Author : Guomin Yang; Göran Lindbergh; Ivars Neretnieks; Michael Holmboe; Jan Forsman; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Clay minerals; Bentonite; density functional theory; molecular dynamics; GROMACS; electric double layer; electrolytes; ionic liquids; primitive model; CLAYFF forcefield.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The swelling properties of Bentonite are highly affected by clay content and the clay-water interactions that arise from the ion distribution in the diffuse double layer formed near the charged montmorillonite (or smectite) surfaces. Existing continuum models describing the electric double layers, such as classical Poisson-Boltzmann and DLVO theory, ignore the ion-ion correlations, which are especially important for multivalent ions at high surface charge and ionic strength. 4. 4. Weathering of mining waste rock containing alum shale and limestone

    Author : Erik Puura; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Geochemical processes occurring in the waste rock dumps ofan old phosphate mine, located in Maardu, northem Estonia, havebeen studied and modelled. The waste rock contains pyritic,metalliferous and organic-rich shale, as well as limestone.Production of acidity during pyrite oxidation is a potentialmechanism for heavy metal release. READ MORE

  5. 5. Borehole sealing with expandable buffer clays in HLW disposal : Lab-scale performance

    Author : Ting Yang; Jörn Kasbohm; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Two basically different multibarrier concepts for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) are the often cited KBS-3 V/H concepts, for isolating nuclear waste at 400-600 m depth and Very Deep Boreholes concepts (VDH) for placement at 2000-4000 m depth. Both make use of expandable clay as isolating medium of canisters with HLW and as backfill material in shafts and tunnels in repositories for safe disposal of such waste. READ MORE
