1. Mild Steam Explosion of Wood and Forest Residues in the Perspective of a Materials Biorefinery
Abstract : The main objective of this work was to explore the prospects of using mild steam explosion as a pretreatment step in a forest based material biorefinery. During the steam explosion saturated steam is applied to the biomass at elevated pressure leading to an autohydrolysis of the lignocellulosic tissue, which is followed by a rapid pressure discharge, disintegrating and opening up the structure. 2. Pre-Extraction of Wood Components Mild hydrothermal methods for a future materials biorefinery
Abstract : Today there is an increasing urgency in discovering new, and more sustainable, replacements for fossil-based materials and chemicals. The biorefinery concept is promising in this context in that it relies on transforming biomass into a spectrum of commercial products. Wood is the primary bioresource in Scandinavia. READ MORE

3. Biopolymers and materials from rapeseed straw biorefining
Abstract : Rapeseed straw was fractionated through a hydrothermal process into its hemicellulose, lignin and cellulose components. In the first step, hemicellulose-rich fractions were extracted. Xylan-rich fractions with high molecular weight, 30,000 – 50,000 g/mol, were obtained at 110 °C and 1.5 M NaOH. READ MORE

4. Towards an accurate determination of lignin in chemical pulps : The meaning of kappa number as a tool for analysis of oxidable groups
Abstract : Lignin content is the most important parameter in chemicalpulping. At present, kappa number is the most common parameterfor determination of lignin content and the base for otheron-line methods and for industrial automation (Chapter 1). READ MORE

5. Ethanol Pulping of Reed Canary Grass
Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of processing an agricultural crop grown in Sweden to usable pulp. A further purpose was to study ethanol pulping applied to a non-wood raw material. The first part of this thesis deals with the criteria for selecting a fibre crop for further studies. READ MORE
