  1. 16. Novel aspects of the molecular biology of gastrointestinal stromal tumors

    Author : Erik Berglund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor in the gastrointestinal tract (GI). Historically, these tumors were commonly mistaken for myogenic and neurogenic masses, and then eventually came to be recognized as a distinct type of soft-tissue sarcoma through ultrastructural findings and specific immunomarkers. 2. 17. Cancer risks in Swedish pesticide applicators in agriculture, forestry and gardening : a toxicological and epidemiological approach

    Author : Jan Dich; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : pesticide applicators; cancer incidence; Hodgkin s disease; non-Hodgkin s lymphoma; soft tissue sarcoma; prostate cancer; pesticides; phenoxy acid herbicides; organochlorine insecticides; occupational exposure; protective equipment; smoking habits;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were (1) to study the cancer risks in Swedish pesticide applicators, which is one of the occupational groups that is most exposed to pesticides in Sweden. This could be done by utilizing a complete register kept by the Swedish Board of Agriculture which include 20,245 subjects with licenses issued between 1965 and 1976, for epidemiological studies. 3. 18. Exploring the therapeutic effects of p53 modulation in cancer and immune cell biology

    Author : Katrine Ingelshed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The tumor suppressor protein p53 is dysregulated in almost all cancer. In around 50% of cancer p53 retains wild type activity but its inactivation by the E3 ligase MDM2 in a heterodimer complex with MDMX may be amplified, leading to loss of p53 activity. READ MORE

  4. 19. Synovial sarcoma : a Scandinavian sarcoma group project

    Author : Björn Skytting; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synovial sarcoma; prognosis; tumor size; poorly differentiated; histologic grading; Ki-67; proliferation; CGH; secondary aberrations; RT-PCR; translocation; SYT-SSX1 SYT-SSX2;

    Abstract : Synovial sarcoma accounts for 5 to 10 % of all soft tissue sarcomas. More than 90 % are found in the extremities or trunk wall. Characteristic for synovial sarcoma is the translocation t(X; 18) (p11.2;q11. READ MORE

  5. 20. Identification and validation of therapeutic targets in sarcoma models

    Author : Wessen Maruwge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In spite of the low incidence of sarcomas, they are highly aggressive tumors, with high metastatic potential, and resistance to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, leaving surgery as the only treatment option. There is evidently an urgent need in identifying molecular targets and oncogenic pathways in sarcomas that can be used for the development and evaluation of drugs directed against these tumors.
