16. Soil Modification by adding small amounts of binders : A laboratory study
Abstract : Soil stabilization through addition of a hydraulic binder is a method frequently used to modify and improve engineering properties of soft soils. Additives like cement and lime are typically used as stabilizers. More recently, industrial by-products, such as fly ashes, cement kiln dust, blast furnace slags and other slags have been used. 17. Fatigue of Asphalt Mixes - Theory of Viscoelasticity and Continuum Damage Mechanics Applied to Uniaxial Fatigue Data from Laboratory Tests
Abstract : The advance of analytic (mechanistic) design methods increases the need for fundamental material properties. Fatigue cracking due to traffic loading, in combination with permanent deformation (rutting), thermal cracking, irregularities, frost heave and reflective cracking are some of the major criteria used when designing an asphalt concrete pavement. 18. Laboratory Investigations of Frost Action Mechanisms in Soils
Abstract : Phase change of the water in the soil skeleton under cold climate conditions (also known as frost action in soils) affects soil properties and can be responsible for serious alterations in a soil body; causing damages (due to the volumetric expansion known as frost heave) to structures on or below the ground surface such as foundations, roads, railways, retaining walls and pipelines, etc. In order to improve the current design methods for roads against frost action, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has initiated a research program. 19. On a mathematical basis for constitutive drivers in soil plasticity
20. Identification of soil parameters in an embankment dam by mathematical optimization
Abstract : The finite element method (FEM) has been widely used to analyse earth and rockfill dams. In a finite element analysis a proper constitutive model has to be chosen for each part of the dam in order to simulate the relation between stresses and strains. The zones of an earth and rockfill dam have different functions. READ MORE
