  2. 2. The soil as a source material in archaeology. : Theoretical considerations and pragmatic applications

    Author : Johan Linderholm; Roger Engelmark; Martin Bell; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Environmental archaeology; Geoarchaeology; Prehistory; Soil phosphate; Magnetic susceptibility; Soil chemistry; Site formation processes; Soil erosion; Archaeology subjects; Arkeologiämnen; Archaeology; arkeologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with questions on various applications using soils and sediments as sources of information in archaeological research. Human environmental impact on soils and sediments, in terms of pollution, is a well known phenomenon as the industrialisation intensified during historical times and onwards and has left strong pollutive marks. 3. 3. Soil Erosion and Mass Movement in Agricultural Drainage Ditches

    Author : Daniel Avilés; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Agricultural drainage ditches degrade over time. This degradation is often due to soil erosion, which can cause mass movement (bank failure) when the toe of the bank is eroded or the slope of the bank is too steep. Soil eroded or displaced by mass movement is either transported by the flowing water or deposited in the drainage ditch. READ MORE

  4. 4. The village that vanished : The roots of erosion in a Tanzanian village

    Author : Vesa-Matti Loiske; Ulf Sporrong; Aud Talle; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : In the village'of Citing in the northern highlands of Tanzania, the factors: social stratification, land tenure, production strategies, investment patterns and the economic uncertainties of society are studied and their relationship to land degradation is examined. The main assumption of the study is that the causes of land degradation are so complex that a methodology that emphasises contextualisation has to be used. READ MORE

  5. 5. Swash Processes and Dune Erosion: Emphasis on Vessel-Generated Waves

    Author : Li Erikson; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; Civil engineering; hydraulic engineering; geomorfologi; Fysisk geografi; climatology; cartography; pedology; geomorphology; Naturvetenskap; Physical geography; Natural science; swash; erosion; vessel-generated waves; dunes; offshore technology; soil mechanics; Väg- och vattenbyggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : In navigable waterways, owing to the relatively short fetches for wind wave generation, the free waves generated by moving vessels often produce the dominant wave action with respect to erosion of the shore. In response to the fairly recent introduction of high-speed ferries, combined with a planned expansion within the passenger- and car-carrying ship market, the need to model and predict coastline changes as a result of exposure to vessel-generated waves has become a topic of increased research.
