1. Microclimate at range margins : Consequences for boreal forest understory species
Abstract : A warmer climate will shift species distributional range margins poleward, but near-ground microclimates may modify these shifts. Cold-adapted northern species at their rear edge may survive locally in microrefugia with a colder microclimate, and warm-adapted southern species at their leading edge may colonize stepping stone habitats with a warmer microclimate. 2. Plants go with the flow : predicting spatial distribution of plant species in the boreal forest
Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis are to study if a topographic wetness index (TWI) could be used as a tool for predicting the spatial distribution of vascular plant species richness in the boreal forest as well as to study congruence in species richness between vascular plants, liverworts, mosses and lichens. A wetness index ln(a/tanβ) based on topography was used to assign a specific TWI-value to every 20 x 20m grid in two 25 km2 boreal forest landscapes (differing in average soil pH) in northern Sweden. 3. Hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing for mapping grassland vegetation
Abstract : As a consequence of agricultural intensification, large areas of species-rich grasslands have been lost and farmland biodiversity has declined. Previous studies have shown that the continuity of grazing management can have a significant influence on the environmental conditions and the levels of plant species diversity in grassland habitats. 4. Effects of facilitation and competition on oak seedlings : using shrubs as nurse-plants to facilitate growth and reduce browsing from large herbivores
Abstract : Plant–plant interactions have been indicated as a potential means to facilitate oak seedling establishment and reduce herbivory when restoring oak forests. The aim of this thesis was to investigate mechanisms and outcomes of competitive and indirectly facilitative interactions between oak (Quercus robur and Q. READ MORE
