1. Towards a Minor Urbanism : Thinking Community without Unity in Recent Makings of Public Space
Abstract : HOW CAN WE PLAN AND DESIGN FOR community in diverse urban situations? In response to segregation and social fragmentation, public space is increasingly being conceived of as a vehicle for fostering openness towards differences, both in planning practice and theory. Drawing on two recent public space projects – Superkilen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Jubileumsparken in Gothenburg, Sweden – this thesis explores what this hopeful idea may mean in terms of the actual making of public space. 2. Spatiality of Multiculturalism
Abstract : Multiculturalism, as a set of ideas and policies, is one of the normative approaches to the current situation of cultural diversity in multicultural cities. But how can the ideas of multiculturalism be translated into the reality of urban form? The overall aim of this dissertation is to provide a theoretical and conceptual frame of reference for distilling and identifying the ideas of multiculturalism which can be translated into spatial form, and in this way, to highlight the role urban form may play in addressing the situation of living living 'together-in-difference’ . 3. Moments on a City Bus : Micro-sociology of Non-verbal Interaction in Urban Bus-riding
Abstract : This thesis seeks to contribute to research on social interaction in public (and semi-public) places in general, and research on non-verbal mundane interaction in these places in particular. By paying empirical attention to the non-verbal interaction that takes place in the context of riding a city bus – which is a contained and time-limited form of social activity – this thesis explores the theoretically rich source of information about mundane interaction that this specific social activity offers. 4. Forever Young : Convolution Inequalities in Weighted Lorentz-type Spaces
Abstract : This thesis is devoted to an investigation of boundedness of a general convolution operator between certain weighted Lorentz-type spaces with the aim of proving analogues of the Young convolution inequality for these spaces.Necessary and sufficient conditions on the kernel function are given, for which the convolution operator with the fixed kernel is bounded between a certain domain space and the weighted Lorentz space of type Gamma. 5. Wastelands of difference? Urban nature and more-than-human difference in Berlin and Gothenburg
Abstract : This thesis explores more-than-human entanglements of contemporary urban environments in order to develop a rearticulation of urban landscapes as spaces decidedly beyond the exclusively human. Taking its cue from the question “How do we live with urban difference today?,” such spaces, the thesis argues, emerge through, as well as change with, a variety of socio-ecological entwinements.
