  1. 21. Selection of Resistance at very low Antibiotic Concentrations

    Author : Erik Gullberg; Dan I Andersson; Diarmaid Hughes; Linus Sandegren; Laura Piddock; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; Selection; Antibiotic resistant bacteria; Minimal inhibitory concentration; Heavy metals; Conjugative plasmid; ESBL; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Abstract : The extensive medical and agricultural use and misuse of antibiotics during the last 70 years has caused an enrichment of resistant pathogenic bacteria that now severely threatens our capacity to efficiently treat bacterial infections. While is has been known for a long time that high concentrations of antibiotics can select for resistant mutants, less is known about the lower limit at which antibiotics can be selective and enrich for resistant bacteria. 2. 22. Inferring Ancestry : Mitochondrial Origins and Other Deep Branches in the Eukaryote Tree of Life

    Author : Ding He; Sandra Baldauf; Siv Andersson; Andrew Roger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular Phylogeny; Phylogenomics; Mitochondria; Eukaryote tree of life; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Abstract : There are ~12 supergroups of complex-celled organisms (eukaryotes), but relationships among them (including the root) remain elusive. For Paper I, I developed a dataset of 37 eukaryotic proteins of bacterial origin (euBac), representing the conservative protein core of the proto-mitochondrion. READ MORE

  3. 23. Making Sense of Antisense

    Author : Johan Reimegård; Gerhart Wagner; Hanah Margalit; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sRNA; miRNA; RNA; target prediction; SOLiD siRNA; E.coli; D.discoideum; Biology; Biologi; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : RNA is a highly versatile molecule with functions that span from being a messenger in the transfer from DNA to protein, a catalytic molecule important for key processes in the cell to a regulator of gene expression. The post-genomic era and the use of new techniques to sequence RNAs have dramatically increased the number of regulatory RNAs during the last decade. READ MORE

  4. 24. Spatial Modelling of Coastal Fish – Methods and Applications

    Author : Göran Sundblad; Ulf Bergström; Alfred Sandström; Peter Eklöv; Christian Möllmann; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Environmental factors influence species and habitats on multiple scales creating a mosaic of distribution patterns. Studying factors shaping these patterns are central to our understanding of population dynamics and ultimately ecosystem functioning. READ MORE

  5. 25. Contributions to the understanding of diversity and evolution in the genus Coreomyces

    Author : Henrik Sundberg; Stefan Ekman; Åsa Kruys; Donald H. Pfister; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The Laboulbeniales is an order of enigmatic ascomycete fungi that are obligate microscopic parasites of arthropods, which are usually non-detrimental. They typically display a high degree of host specificity, and the genus Coreomyces, which is the recurring theme of this thesis, is no exception. READ MORE
