  1. 21. Functional Aspects of Peripheral and Spinal Cord Neurons Involved in Itch and Pain

    Author : Bejan Aresh; Malin Lagerström; Klas Kullander; Martin Schmelz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : mGluR7; anaphylaxis; Grpr; Penk; Pdyn; Cre line; BAC cloning; spinal cord; transgenic line; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : We have investigated the role of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (mGluR7) and the gastrin releasing peptide receptor (Grpr) population that are involved at different levels of itch transmission. We found that mGuR7 deficient mice displayed an anaphylaxis-like behavior when provoked with histamine. READ MORE

  2. 22. Medical problems associated with spinal cord lesions - impact on functioning

    Author : Kirsi Valtonen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : spinal cord injuries; meningomyelocele; rehabilitation; osteoporosis; bone density; employment; sexuality;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aim of this thesis was to study the effects of medical problems associated with spinal cord lesions on functioning - with special interest in work participation and sexual functioning. A special aim was to explore bone mineral density and associated factors in persons with meningomyelocele. READ MORE

  3. 23. Human spinal cord models for development of spinal cord injury repair strategies

    Author : Chenhong Lin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : There is still no available cure for human spinal cord injury (SCI). After a SCI, neural cell loss, excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, astrocytic and oligodendrocytic derived inhibiting factors contribute to a non-permissive spinal cord environment hindering neuroregeneration with little, if any, endogeneous functional improvement. 4. 24. Neuroprotection in the Injured Spinal Cord : Novel Strategies using Immunomodulation, Stem cell Transplantation and Hyaluronic acid Hydrogel carriers

    Author : Nikos Schizas; Nils Hailer; Elena Kozlova; Mikael Svensson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Hyaluronic Acid-based hydrogel; motorneurons; microglial cells; Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist; Renshaw cells; excitotoxicity; neuroinflammation; Neural Crest Stem Cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to establish strategies to minimize secondary damage to the injured spinal cord. Secondary damage that follows spinal cord injury (SCI) involves inflammatory and excitotoxic pathways. READ MORE

  5. 25. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord

    Author : Lina Pettersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; trk; spinal cord; sensory neuron; rat; PAC1; PACAP; ORL1; OFQ N; neurotrophin; neuropeptide; nerve transection; nerve compression; inflammatory pain; BDNF; DRG;

    Abstract : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-).
