  1. 1. Numerical studies of transtion in wall-bounded flows

    Author : Ori Levin; Dan Henningson; Nikolaus Adams; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; boundary layer; suction; wall jet; streaks; waves; periodic disturbance; localized disturbance; turbulent spot; algebraic growth; exponential growth; stability; transition thresholds; transition prediction; PSE; DNS; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : Disturbances introduced in wall-bounded flows can grow and lead to transition from laminar to turbulent flow. In order to reduce losses or enhance mixing in energy systems, a fundamental understanding of the flow stability and transition mechanism is important. READ MORE

  2. 2. Fatigue of Spot Welded Joints: Experiments and Life Predictions

    Author : Hans-Fredrik Henrysson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; crack closure; crack propagation; crack initiation; finite element method; damage accumulation; variable amplitude; fracture mechanics; fatigue; spot welds;

    Abstract : Methods to assess the fatigue strength of spot welds in built-up structures are used on a daily basis in the automotive industry. Efficient and reliable numerical methods make it possible to achieve designs with low weight, low manufacturing costs and good durability within short development cycles, since the number of prototypes built can be reduced. 3. 3. Satellie Monitoring of Urban Growth and Indicator-based Assessment of Environmental Impact

    Author : Dorothy Furberg; Yifang Ban; Margareta Ihse; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Urban growth; remote sensing; landcover classification; landscape metrics; environmental indicators; environmental impact; Greater Toronto Area; Stockholm; Shanghai;

    Abstract : One of the major consequences of urbanization is the transformation of land surfaces from rural/natural environments to built-up land that supports diverse forms of human activity. These transformations impact the local geology, climate, hydrology, flora and fauna and human-life supporting ecosystem services in the region. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spatial-Temporal Patterns of Urban Growth in Shanghai, China: Monitoring, Analysis, and Simulation

    Author : Qian Zhang; Yifang Ban; Jiyuan Liu; Bin Jiang; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; urban growth; spatial-temporal pattern; remote sensing; spatial metrics; scenarios-based simulation; Shanghai; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Supporting huge population, megacities are definitely the hot spots of production, consumption, and waste generation. Without careful investment and planning, megacities will be overwhelmed by burgeoning negative impacts on the environment, natural resources, and human health, as well as a host of social and economic issues. 5. 5. Novel RelA-SpoT Homolog toxin-antitoxin systems that inhibit bacterial growth through production of toxic alarmone ppApp

    Author : Steffi Jimmy; Vasili Hauryliuk; Vicky Shingler; Michael T. Laub; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; p ppGpp; ppApp; toxin; antitoxin; alarmone; antibacterials; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The stress alarmone nucleotides guanosine pentaphosphate (pppGpp) and tetraphosphate (ppGpp), collectively known as (p)ppGpp, are the molecular mediators of the bacterial stringent response — a bacterial stress response implicated in virulence, antibiotic tolerance and biofilm formation. At high concentrations, (p)ppGpp halts bacterial growth, inhibits protein synthesis and rewires transcription and metabolism. READ MORE
