  1. 6. Tree Transformations in Inductive Dependency Parsing

    Author : Jens Nilsson; Joakim Nivre; Pierre Nugues; Växjö universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inductive Dependency Parsing; Dependency Structure; Tree Transformation; Non-projectivity; Coordination; Verb Group; Language technology; Språkteknologi; Computer and Information Sciences Computer Science; Data- och informationsvetenskap;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis deals with automatic syntactic analysis, or parsing, of natural languages. A parser constructs the syntactic analysis, which it learns by looking at correctly analyzed sentences, known as training data. The general topic concerns manipulations of the training data in order to improve the parsing accuracy. READ MORE

  2. 7. Clustering in Swedish : The Impact of some Properties of the Swedish Language on Document Clustering and an Evaluation Method

    Author : Magnus Rosell; Viggo Kann; Björn Levin; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Document Clustering; Language technology; Språkteknologi;

    Abstract : Text clustering divides a set of texts into groups, so that texts within each group are similar in content. It may be used to uncover the structure and content of unknown text sets as well as to give new perspectives on known ones. READ MORE

  3. 8. Translation as Linear Transduction : Models and Algorithms for Efficient Learning in Statistical Machine Translation

    Author : Markus Saers; Joakim Nivre; Anna Sågvall Hein; Dekai Wu; Kevin Knight; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; linear transduction; linear transduction grammar; inversion transduction; zipper finite-state automaton; zipper finite-state transducer; formal language theory; formal transduction theory; translation; automatic translation; machine translation; statistical machine translation; Computational linguistics; Datorlingvistik; Language technology; Språkteknologi; Computational Linguistics; Datorlingvistik;

    Abstract : Automatic translation has seen tremendous progress in recent years, mainly thanks to statistical methods applied to large parallel corpora. Transductions represent a principled approach to modeling translation, but existing transduction classes are either not expressive enough to capture structural regularities between natural languages or too complex to support efficient statistical induction on a large scale. 4. 9. Error Handling in Spoken Dialogue Systems : Managing Uncertainty, Grounding and Miscommunication

    Author : Gabriel Skantze; Rolf Carlson; Alexander Rudnicky; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; speech communications; linguistics; Language technology; Språkteknologi;

    Abstract : Due to the large variability in the speech signal, the speech recognition process constitutes the major source of errors in most spoken dialogue systems. A spoken dialogue system can never know for certain what the user is saying, it can only make hypotheses. READ MORE

  5. 10. Compound Processing for Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation

    Author : Sara Stymne; Lars Ahrenberg; Joakim Nivre; Alexander Fraser; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Machine translation; compounds; factored translation; statistical machine translation; computational linguistics; Computational linguistics; Datorlingvistik; Language technology; Språkteknologi; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : In this thesis I explore how compound processing can be used to improve phrase-based statistical machine translation (PBSMT) between English and German/Swedish. Both German and Swedish generally use closed compounds, which are written as one word without spaces or other indicators of word boundaries. READ MORE
