21. Neural Progenitor Cells in malignancy and injury of the brain. A Trojan Horse fro gliomas?
Abstract : Gliomas are neoplasms arising in the central nervous system (CNS), and constitute the most common primary brain tumor. They are classified depending on the grade and morphology, from grade I, pilocytic astrocytoma, to grade IV, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Glioblastomas constitute a great challenge in treatment due to their disseminating nature. READ MORE

22. Metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita - dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history
Abstract : This thesis starts with a review of different biodiversity assessment methods in forests and the rest deals with the metapopulation ecology of Osmoderma eremita, a threatened beetle living in hollow trees. I concentrate on the effect of dispersal, habitat quality and habitat history for the presence, population size and future survival of this species. READ MORE

23. Laser Diagnostics in Combustion - Elastic Scattering and Picosecond Laser-Induced Fluorescence
Abstract : Elastic scattering and the Lorenz-Mie (LM) theory in particular is used for the characterization of sub-micron- and micron-sized droplets of organic fuels in sprays and aerosols. Calculations on the Lorenz- Mie theory show that backward-sideward scattered visible radiation can be used for unambiguous detection of ensembles of homogeneous droplets of organic substances with diameters around 1 micrometer (size parameter between 2 and 6). 24. Human Endogenous Retroviruses: Expression and Evolutionary Relationships
Abstract : The human genome contains genetic elements which are more or less similar to infectious retroviruses. These are called human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) and are thought to be remnants of infections in the primate lineage. READ MORE

25. Pairing correlation in atomic nuclei under extreme conditions
Abstract : The pairing correlation has long been recognized as the dominant many-body correlation beyond the nuclear mean field. Pairing plays an essential role in many nuclear phenomena including the occurrence of a systematic odd-even staggering (OES) of the nuclear binding energy. READ MORE
