  1. 1. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus

    Author : Christine Ekdahl Clementson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; minocycline; lipopolysaccharide; microglia activation; status epilepticus; epilepsy; cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases; apoptosis; neurogenesis; progenitor cell progeny;

    Abstract : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 2. 2. Brain injury after cardiac arrest - the predictive information of EEG

  3. 3. The influence of status epilepticus on adeno-pituitary hormone secretion in man : with special reference to prolactin

    Author : Ulla Lindbom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : epilepsy; status epilepticus; prolactin; growth hormone; cortisol; thyroidstimulating hormone TSH ; thyrotropin-releasing hormone TRH ; hypothalamic-pituitary axis;

    Abstract : Epileptic seizures as well as antiepileptic drugs (AED) may interfere with the hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) and have neuroendocrine effects. A transient increase of prolactin (PRL) and cortisol in serum after generalised tonic-clonic or complex partial seizures has been one of the most consistent findings, although absences and myoclonic seizures, as well as seizures of very short duration, do not seem to affect PRL levels. 4. 4. Cardiac arrest and therapeutic hypothermia: Prognosis and outcome

    Author : Malin Rundgren; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypothermia; NSE; S-100B; EEG; cardiac arrest; prognosis;

    Abstract : Abstract Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only treatment available to reduce neurological sequels for unconscious patients following cardiac arrest (CA). TH requires sedation and muscular relaxation, obscuring the clinical neurological examination for estimation of prognosis, and clinical decision making. READ MORE

  5. 5. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors

    Author : Irene Kanter Schlifke; Lund Wallenberg Neurocentrum; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; piriform cortex; hippocampus; neuropsykologi; encapsulated cells; viral vectors; GDNF; galanin; epilepsy; gene therapy; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE.
