  1. 11. Seasonal change in defensive coloration in a shieldbug

    Author : Aleksandra I. Johansen; Gabriella Gamberale-Stille; Birgitta S. Tullberg; Graeme Ruxton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Shield bug; colour change; protective coloration; cryptic; aposematic; behavioural change; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Protective coloration such as aposematism and crypsis occurs in many insects but only a few species alter their defensive strategy during the same instar. We hypothesize the adult shield bug Graphosoma lineatum with an alternating black and non-melanised longitudinal striation exhibit such a change in defensive coloration. READ MORE

  2. 12. Shear Strength of Unfilled and Rough Rock Joints in Sliding Stability Analyses of Concrete Dams

    Author : Fredrik Johansson; Håkan Stille; Kaare Hoeg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Geoengineering and mining engineering; Geoteknik och gruvteknik;

    Abstract : The horizontal water load combined with uplift forces implies that concrete damsare sensitive for sliding. At the same time, the safety of concrete dams againstsliding in the rock foundation is associated with large uncertainties. One of themain uncertainties regards the shear strength of rock joints. 3. 13. Artificial Ground Freezingin Clayey Soils : Laboratory and Field Studies of Deformations During Thawing at the Bothnia Line

    Author : Teddy Johansson; Staffan Hintze; Håkan Stille; Sven Knutsson; Kauko Kujala; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Artificial ground freezing; AGF; thaw deformation; deformation; thawing; frost heaving; Bothnia Line.; Artificiell markfrysning; artificiell jord- och bergfrysning; AGF; tiningsdeformation; deformation; tining; tjälhävning; Botniabanan; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Artificial ground freezing as a method to temporarily stabilize and create hydraulic sealing in urban as well as in rural areas has been used in a number of Swedish construction projects, particularly during the last decade. One problem with the freezing of soil and rock is that fine-grained clayey types of soils have showed a tendency to under certain circumstances, during the thawing process, create a pore water overpressure and to consolidate, despite a change in the external loading conditions. 4. 14. Evolution of Mimicry and Aposematism Explained: Salient Traits and Predator Psychology

    Author : Baharan Kazemi; Olof Leimar; Gabriella Gamberale-Stille; Mike Speed; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; imperfect mimicry; mimicry evolution; predator learning; discrimination; generalization; salience; overshadowing; aposematism; warning signal evolution; generalization bias; peak shift; etologi; Ethology;

    Abstract : Aposematic species have evolved conspicuous warning signals, such as bright colors and striking patterns, to deter predators. Some edible and harmless species take advantage of this deterrent effect by mimicking their appearance. Mimicry is a great example of how natural selection produces remarkable adaptations. READ MORE

  5. 15. Remedial Injection Grouting of Embankment Dams with Non-Hardening Grouts

    Author : Johan Lagerlund; Håkan Stille; Sven Knutsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis is to study the possibility of injection grouting of embankment dams affected by internal erosion. Internal erosion is a process where certain soil material from an embankment dam is removed. This phenomenon occurs in the central core of the embankment dam. READ MORE
