  1. 1. Predicting Spatial and Stratigraphic Quick-clay Distribution in SW Sweden

    Author : Martin Persson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quick clay; Stratigraphic modeling;

    Abstract : Clay sediments are associated with a wide variety of engineering problems, of which landslides, together with settlement, are the most investigated due to the large associated costs. Quick-clay deposits, which if disturbed can transform into a liquid, pose a serious threat to society in southwestern Sweden and have been involved in several large landslides, sometimes with fatal consequences. 2. 2. Modeling internal deformation of salt structures targeted for radioactive waste disposal

    Author : Zurab Chemia; Hemin Koyi; Harro Schmeling; Ian Alsop; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : salt; diapir; anhydrite; deformation; entrainment; numerical modeling; rheology; sinking; Gorleben;

    Abstract : This thesis uses results of systematic numerical models to argue that externally inactive salt structures, which are potential targets for radioactive waste disposal, might be internally active due to the presence of dense layers or blocks within a salt layer.The three papers that support this thesis use the Gorleben salt diapir (NW Germany), which was targeted as a future final repository for high-grade radioactive waste, as a general guideline. 3. 3. Land Degradation and Climate in Iceland - a spatial and temporal assessment

    Author : Rannveig Olafsdottir; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; spatial analysis; long-term analysis; Holocene; spatial simulations; Iceland; Geology; fysisk geografi; physical geography; Geologi; land cover; farmers perception; Land degradation;

    Abstract : Degradation of vegetation and soil erosion has contributed to loss of biological productivity and land degradation in Iceland. This thesis focuses on spatial and temporal patterns of land degradation in Iceland from a geographical perspective both along short and long timescales. READ MORE
